they sing because they have a message, mostly about other criminal birds.
actually having had much time to watch and listen to barn swallows because I lived next to a river. I identified several calls to events that were going on at the time so undoubtedly at least part of it is communication. There was a place I liked to sit between them and a nest and they would scold me severely until I learned to make the call I heard them often use after a strang happening ended and calm once again prevailed. When scolded I simply did my immitation of the all clear sign and they would fly right by me to their nest. Proof enough to me. Barn Swallows seem more intelligent than many other breeds but I may just think that because I can not percieve the differances in the calls of others like say the wiperwill.
another interesting thing I observed is that they do indeed bomb wind shields. I noted that as I watched them doing so when my cady was parked with the windshield facing towards the river where they fed. One after another they would fly in and drop on their target until they were satisfied and then stopped. I noted if my shield faced away form the river they left it alone. My guess the glare interferred with their hunting.

I have no idea....but I totally hate it. In the summer after I've finally gotten 2 hours of sleep because it's cool enough to finally sleep and the mosquitos have stopped bothering me. I wake up at 4am to these birds....chirping and singing and tweeting. (sigh)
I get up....slam the window shut, so I don't have to hear them, but they continue with their early morning song. The fact that my family members have built and hung bird-houses in the trees that are right outside my bedroom window...reminds me that I had considered the birds to be welcome in my yard. Never-the-less.....I am now too tired and itchy (from mosquito bites), to respect the birds.......I just want to yell "shut-up"!!
They never do....and then winter comes and I complain because it's too too cold.....I want summer back.
What was your question? Birds.....Oh ya...I don't know why they sing.

Birds sing for many reasons: to greet each other, to define their territories, to let their parents know they're hungry, to attract a mate, to warn each other of approaching danger and to tell each other about good feeding spots.
birds learn to sing from their seniors, and their seniors learn from their great seniors. i read from a book that says, if u want ur robin to sing well, u have to let it mingle with other older robins that sings. ur robin will learn from them. and soon, maybe the greatest singer.

For any number of reasons. To signal other members of the flock of approaching danger, or to attract a mate, or possibly because they feel like it.

As a basic form of comunication, they tweet to show others where they are and to alert a posssible mate to their whereabouts. They also tweet to warn against predators.

Its a conspiracy.
They are finding the elusive brown note/melody that they will all sing together in unison and make the whole world poop on their pants.
