Yes, I've heard of this. It has happened to a couple of my nephews and a few friends.

Well;; I just got done having 4 teeth out for braces. If your teeth are crowded and need more room to move and become straight, then they need to take them out. But it seems kinda weird that your orthodontist didnt say that and the dentist wants to do it AFTER you got the braces on. Talk to your orthodontist. If you dont trust him;; get a second opinion.

I had four teeth out under local anaesthetic at my dentist surgery, but that was before I had my brace. My teeth are perfectly straight now. The teeth coming out was a good thing, it gave the rest of them a chance. Now my wisdom teeth are through and there's room for them too. It saved me alot of hassle.
Could you get a second opinion from another dentist, or a dental hospital?

They sometimes remove teeth to make enough room for the ones to go into place. This is not rare its quite common as lots of people wear braces because there mouths are crowded with teeth so to take some out would be easier to make the space needed.

When I had my braces I had to have one tooth taken out because of the overcrowding in my mouth. So it is common to have teeth removed to help create more space for the teeth to straighten. But if you are not convinced have him explain what he wants to do, ask him to show you it on the x-rays. If you are still not happy get a second opinion from another dentist

Usually, they take teeth out because your mouth is too small. I had four pre-molars removed when I had braces over ten years ago. Ask your orthodontist about a palate expander. My sister had one, and she didn't have to have teeth removed. It may be due to your age, or the state of your teeth. Express your concerns to your orthodontist and your dentist. It's your right as a patient to have procedures explained to you.

HI,
THE BEST WAY TO FIND OUT IF YOU HAVE TO HAVE ANY TEETH TAKEN OUT IS BY GOING TO SEE AN ORTHODONTIST. PS. IF YOU DONT TRUST YOUR DENTIST, FIND ANOTHER ONE!
GOOD LUCK
