Depends -- do they want you to bake them in the same dutch oven? I think you will be OK if you boil the potatoes, then transfer them to a glass bowl or casserole dish.
Sometimes it's really nice to have a dutch oven, though, especially when you are simmering something for hours over very low heat. Or if you need to go from stove-top directly to the oven.

The purpose of a dutch oven is so that you can cook on the stove top and then transfer to the oven. A regular pot will NOT serve both purposes. You can however boil your potatoes in a regular pot and then transfer to a pyrex dish. It will save you some money-but if you are looking for a dutch oven, Sur La Table has some nice deals going on right now-(if you have one in your area)

the difference between a dutch oven and pots and pans are usually the handles. The dutch oven has a lid and the handles are usually metal so you can start on the stove top and then tranfer into the oven. Most pots have a plastic handle so you can not transfer them. As long as it's not going in the oven don't worry about it.

absolutely not!!!
dutch ovens are very heavy and made of iron. They are good conductors of heat. and cook very evenly. your food will not cook right at all in a regular pot.
if you want to try something REALLY good take your dutch oven camping. make a simple stew. put it straight into the coals. then shovel some coals on top of it. let it sit for about 30 to 45 minutes. MAN ITS GOOD!!!!

RE:
Can I substitute a regular pot for a "Dutch Oven"?
I'm making a sweet potato casserole and the recipe says to boil the potatoes in a dutch oven... but I don't have one. I don't care if I have to buy one... but if I don't have to... I would rather save my money for christmas gifts... I have a regular ol' pot though... Will it...

Should be fine. I use all kinds of pots. Sometimes when a recipe calls for a dutch oven...they mean size.

some times if it just size that matters, but not if you are doing dutch oven cooking, iron heats slow but holds its heat longer and evenly.
