If you go back to the days of dog fighting when it was legal ,you never heard of a Pitty biting a human.Any human aggressive Pittys where culled , any Pittys that weren't hot dogs where given away as pets , retired fighters where given away as pets. The dog on the Little Rascals and Our Gang Comedy was a Pit.If this breed was so dangerous do you think in a million years they would've had Petey around all those kids in such a close setting. They used more then one Petey. How about Christine Crawfords Sar Pits, Dakota , Cheyene , and Tahoe , or Neville who works in law enforcement , or Popsicle. These dogs work very close with the public every day of their lives ,giving their lives for humans.

I don't mean to sound hurtful ,but to the people that say they have seen Pits all of a sudden bite their loving families,Pits just don't turn and attack ,there are suttle signs of aggression that the owners ignore. This is the reason for bites. Mostly struggles for dominance.

In todays society far too many people are breeding these loving noble dogs for the almighty dollar with out any regard to the breed such as tempermant or health. Then you have owners who want these dogs for all the wrong reasons and these dogs become abused. The dogs are used as gaurd dogs. When the dog is not human aggressive ,then the poor dog is beat and abused. So the dog is turned loose and becomes unstable because of abuse, other dogs are used for dog fighting and abused.Tell me if you went through some of these atoscities ,would you be stable?Would you trust humans?

I've seen some abused Pits taken out of very bad situations and put into loving stable homes and have become the most loving dogs to their famalies. Not all can be saved. It breaks my heart.

Don't blame the breed ,blame the deed. This breed is one of the most maligned breeds ever.

I just wasted 30 minutes trying to find a way to possibly help you learn something useful. SCREW IT!! It's hopeless. I say that after seeing the way you treated others on the site who were being honest, thoughtful, & helpful. If I am going to be verbally abused by you, I might as well say something to be abused for, even though I believe it's true. You tend to yell & scream & act very unpredictable around your pets & family. It is there for all to see right here in your ranting editorial. I pray one of your dogs never "snaps".

To all the rest of you, I mostly agree. Pits can be wonderful pets if raised with respect & love. Breeding can be overcome. But, bad training can be accidental. If you tend to be excitable, express anger loudly, lose your temper without warning, or swat with anger (w/o thinking about it first), then please get a different breed. The pit breed seems to snap under stress more often than most other breeds. I love animals. I would never intentionally hurt one. I have a pit "friend" I visit frequently & love that sweet, dumb, wuss to death. I am also bi polar, subject to sudden mood swing & anger. I am the wrong type of owner for this breed. The proof is in the first paragraph.

Treat your animal with respect & it will respect you. It will not matter who's boss. It will usually let you think you are

Everytime I get on here, there is a question about pitbulls and so many people give the same answer. Its predjudice to judge one pit because of the way another has acted. I have owned pit bulls, and they have been the sweetest (dummest) most lovable dogs ever. They have all been great with my kids, and I never feared the ones in my home, however I did fear the pits in my neighborhood, but only because their owners raised them to be mean. I knew someone that bred pits for fighting. In order to make them mean--3 days before a fight, he would lock these pits into a dark shed with no food and no water, and never any human socialization. Then on the 3rd day, he would take them straight out of the shed into the fighting ring. I get so sick of the bad things people say about pits. Any stupid human can do this kind of torture to any breed of dog and they will come out mean too. The whole lock jaw is incorrect. The truth is that pits are used for fighting because they are very muscular strong dogs, and yes their jaw is very strong, but it doesnt lock. Punish the deed not the breed. As far as people in good homes that are nice to pits and the pits turn on them then it is a proven fact that they were improperly bred and sold to whomever would take them. For all the tuff pit bull haters---prove us pitbull lovers wrong--take a healthy bred pit pup into your home, and in two years tell me that they are still a terrible breed. Oh I forgot==you people are too scared.

Ok, i have seen all over the world this same thing, people in america think its bad how pitbulls are treated you should come to the Philippines and see it. Hell people here get shih tzu's and kennel them for life never releasing them just imagine how they treat the pits they buy just for the dog fighting that goes on here in open plain sight. If people want to witness what happens to a dog when its mistreated come here, you will find golden retrievers here 10 times more aggressive then almost any pitbull in america. So stop blaming dog aggressiveness on the breed, hell almost every terrier breed from the tiny to the big will attack another dog its in the nature of them to be dominant. but do you hear of the vile nature of the Scottish Terrier, or the Jack Russel being called horrible, no. And if you want to talk about human aggression in a dog, then how bout those tiny little toy dog, which are more tempermental and aggressive towards people then any of the medium to giant breeds. You have a better chance of being bit by a Toy dog then a pitbull or Rottweiler any day of the week. I have been around dogs my whole life, raising them and training them, and i will tell you now, there is not a single breed of dog in the domesticated listing (of which there is over 800 breeds) that is naturally bad or evil. Domesticated dogs love people, but each breed is picky, some only love their owners some love everyone, some are in the middle, and those that are abused by their owners grow to distrust all people. and if your wondering, i have a 2yr old male Rottie, a 3month Pitbull/American Bulldog, a 10month Great Pyrenese/Border Collie, 10 month Beagle and then a 2yr old Shih Tzu for the wife, and that is just currently. All of my dogs get along great, does my Rottie growl and scare away strange people? Yes its in his nature by breeding to be protective, i didnt encourage it i just knew it would be and accepted it. And yes i have been attacked by pitbulls.. and dozens of toy dogs and poodles and many other of the oh so loved and friendly breeds cause they were badly raised. do i blame the breed? no, i know its not that dogs fault its the person that didnt show the proper love and care for that dog, or someone that didnt know the breed before buying then just threw it out when it got to "hard" to handle. Dogs have been beside man for over 10,000 years do you really think after 10,000 years of instincts of being breed to be companions and protectors they would all of sudden turn into monsters? Pitbulls have been around since the 1800's and earlier with minimal reports of them being evil... but there is tons of reports of them being great loyal companions. Stop being baised on the breed, start being biased on the breeders and owners.

Here is the reality, like it or not.
Just as a Shepard is predisposed to herd animals, and a Retriever is predisposed to retrieve birds so too is the Pit Bull predisposed to fight (bite).

These are the functions that the breeds were developed to perform, it is as simple as that. In almost all cases of Pit Bull attacks the offender was a wonderful loving pet,,, right up until the moment it bit someone.

Hi Emma, That is a bunch of bull. Pit bull are nice dogs. It's how the owners raise them how they will turn out. All of your druggy bunches are mean and starve their pit bulls just to make them mean. They also like to hit on them alot. These are the people who needs to be lock up and starved and beat on like they did their poor dogs. That's why pit bull are known as being mean and killers. The ones who learn this behavior, they have to put them down when it's not really their fault.I just hate to see anything like this. They are good dogs in the right hands. A Friend.

I agree with everyone here. I have one of those breeds that people frown upon, I've got a staffordshire terrier. (staffy, for short) yes, they too can be a 'dangerous' breed, but people have to remember it's how you raise the dog that is the outcome! All the staffys I know are great little dogs: my dogs 'best friends' are two other males and the three of them go to the beach and play like lunatics. My dog Harley is a bit of a dumbarse at times, but people see these staffys playing and run like hell! It's amazing, but also very frustrating. Its because of the bad press over the years that give these breeds of dogs a bad name.

Unfortunately though, there are people that breed/raise the pitties and staffys for fighting and these are the people that give the rest of us a bad name.

I totally agree with you! We have a Pitt, and he is the biggest p---y you could ever meet.

The one thing that stands out with/about Pitts is that the dumb asses out their that do abuse them and raise/abuse them to fight. That is where they get there bad names.

My Pitt is such a wussy, my Boston terrier would get on top of him and she just sounded like she was eating him up, but my point is that he (the Pitt Bull) never ever ever attempted to bite snap or get aggressive with her. (she the Boston is gone now unfortunately) Most important, my Pitt was not the reason of her death. I trust my Pitt completely with my son.

Pitt's are great, as long as they have the right owners.(like any dog's, but for some reason Pitt's are the main dogs that hits the news, Why is that, I know other dogs attack.and if people would look at the Pitts that have hit the news are the ones that are chained up and missed treated. Or people go up to there territory, like any dog, they protect what they know that is there's.
..So many think that it is cool to fight animals, especially Pitts. The abusers should be the ones who get put down, the dogs are doing what they are taught.

OK, you asked and I'm just answering. You won't like or agree with my answer, I suspect.

These dogs and close relatives were bred for their unflinching ferocious aggressiveness and their strength and unwavering tenacity. This makes these dogs a greater danger than the average dog when it does decide to turn on someone or something.

Another contributing factor these days is that every ghetto and white trash thug has these dogs and they got them for their macho image and too many in this setting have been handled and trained to bring out their aggressive nature not as cuddly family pets.

Too many people who don't breed and handles these dogs for their aggressiveness fail to properly train and socially condition these dogs from birth; increasing the chance of a negative encounter given the matter of time.

About once a month we hear about deadly or devastating attacks on humans or other people's pets by these dogs.

So, the general population is dealing with this understanding of these types of dogs.

I'm sure that your pit bull does not match any of the ideas I've offered and is all warm fuzzies and tail wags; but that's your dog.

I said you wouldn't like my answer, but, again, I'm just answering your question and mean no ill will by it. Personally I've had limited, but positive interactions with pit bulls and the like, but have witnessed several attacks from a distance.
