Our dog went missing about 3 months ago, we placed fliers everywhere and asked neighbors, we had no luck.

Yesterday, upon returning home, we noticed the dog was chained across the street. We approached the house and was greeted right away by the lady who lived there, We told her that we suspected her to have our dog, she denied it and told us they had this dog for 3 months, which we replied that it was 3 months ago when he ran off.

We were friendly but wanted the dog back, but when she told us that she had him registered, we pretty much thought there was nothing we can do about it. We exchanged info and was aloud to come over whenever we want and play with "their" dog.

problems though, the dog was not nuturered, this is Illegal in our state of New Mexico, so registration may have been fraud. We did not purchase him because he was a stray which no one claimed in a 2 year period, he came to us. we did post fliers about him though and no one came. What can we do to get him back

If you have any records of having him vaccinated or treated at a local vet's office, that will do as proof. If you have photos of him with your family, that will also do as proof of ownership..If you have any of those documents, you can tell her that you will let small claim's court settle it, and I'll bet she gives him back, as she would end up paying court costs of about $120 when she loses...

One question....do you have a photo of the dog taken with a family member or inside your house?

I would call the police and present any and all information that you may have showing you as the original owners of the dog (including a copy of the flyer you posted). Let the police request the registration papers they say they have.

Check at the registry office, if the dog Is registered then I would report it to the Police. If it isn't, then register it in your name and call the police, show them the paperwork and they should make her give him back. Good Luck !!

Just make out a police report - and if the dog answers to his name when you call it - that will show proof of ownership.

Collector has the right idea! I'd definitely steal him back. If she has him chained up, she sucks anyway. I bet she's lying. Go get him...good luck!

steal him back , take him to the vet to get neutered and when doggie comes home, your "neutered" male has found his way home and then get him registered. don't forget to micro chip the dog.

If that was my dog & I knew it, I would beat somebody senseless. Then plead temporary insanity if needed.
