would that seem awkward?
What would your reaction be? As a girl that is.
A person that i chat with online said to just go up to girls and introduce myself and ask casual questions.
I'm in college and don't really have any friends to warm the waters for me. I'm very shy, so this will be hard for me to do.

Say what level of school you are in so i have an idea who is giving me advice.

I've already graduated, but I remember those early days of not knowing anyone and feeling alone and vulnerable. I very much appreciated it when people (especially guys) walked up to me in public and made small talk. I was very shy then too. But I soon learned that I could also approach people and talk about the weather or some other non-essential subject. I made several friends that way. Talking to someone made the waiting in lines go faster and helped me realize that I wasn't alone. It really isn't necessary to introduce yourself first. You should wait to see if you have a "connection" with a person before you give your name or ask them for theirs.

Finished with all the education I want and feel that I need. But yes, I agree. I don't see a woman (or girl) being offended by you just going up and talking to her about general topics. I wouldn't start off too personal, that's something you get into once you've become more acquainted. You do know of course that, that doesn't mean she'll be interested, so you might end up talking to a few girls. Just keep trying, there will be girls that end up being your friends and and some won't. But you'll never find "the girl" if you don't try.

I'm in grad school in Ohio and ya, just go up and start talking... I'd feel more comfortable if it happened while waiting for class to start, either already in the room or in the hall. Just start talking about the class or something...if you find yourself in a bar, and see someone you like, first make sure theyre single, then buy her a drink! Worst case scenario, she doesnt acknowledge you...big deal. I think class would be your best bet. Just talk to her enough times to know her and ask her out.

its cool if a guy just comes up to me and introduces himself. it makes things alot simpler. but don't try to use any lines or jokes right away. its a cheap ploy for attention.

It really depends on WHERE I am.
If it was at college, it wouldn't be that weird for me. I'm approachable at college.
If it was in the elevator at my apartment, it would be odd, but ok.
In public, it would be almost scary for me, and kinda weird.

So, it depends on where you are, really.

I would be leary of anyone approaching me like that- in society today you have to be on your guard. And what difference is our education level in answering this question?

the full, "hi. i'm so-and-so. what's your call?" sounds surprisingly awkward to me. i'm used to casual verbal substitute in the initiating and have the creation someplace interior the middle or in direction of the top.
