My boss booked tickets for us to fly somewhere in Asia and all he had was my name. No other personal particulars. No passport number, when it expires and stuff like that.

All the passport stuff will be taken care of when you check in at the airport. All that is needed is a name to book.

I book tickets all the time for passengers with only their names and credit card information. We do have to have a phone number and address to create a ticket record, but it can be the number of the person booking the ticket for the other person, as can the credit card info. We ticket without passport information in the record. Visa and passport documents are the responsibility of the passenger. You do need to check to see if you will require a visa to the country where you are going.

Yes it is possible. Ticketing agent sometimes asks for the passport expiry date but at the end of the day, the onus is on the traveller to ensure that his/her passport is valid for entry to the destination. All the ticketing agent require is the name of the traveller, however, the name has to be spelt correctly and exactly as indicated on the passport. Some ticketing agent penalise customer for amendment made to the name on the air ticket.

You can block the seat for a particular day by giving the name of the passenger. However, for issue of ticket, passport details are required.
