An Ecclesiastical.Schism is a formal division within, or separation from, a church or religious body over some doctrinal difference.

The Great Schism of 1054 occurred between the Eastern and Western Christian Church. There are many reason for the split, but one of them is that before the split the Bishop of Rome was given the place of first among equals. And the Bishop of Rome wanted to be the head of the Whole Church, he did not want the other Bishops to have as much say in running the Church. . I agree with the Orthodox on this one. The Church at Rome broke away from the rest of the Church over this and some other points of doctrine.

I noticed that someone here said that a person that was RC or Orthodox could receive communion in each others Church. This is not true. There are still major differences between the Orthodox and RC Church and they are not in communion with each other. Only the Anglican Church (of these 3 branches that consider themselves to be a "catholic" church) allows others to receive. A RC or an Orthodox can receive in an Anglican church. The Orthodox probably would not do it. An RC might. But this is because the Anglican Church is open, not because we have any agreement with the other two. We are all 3 in dialog with each other trying to reconcile our differences. But so far an Anglican can not receive in an Orthodox Church or an RC Church. At least not officially. I do receive in an RC church from time to time, but the priest prefer that you "don't ask, don't tell".

A schism is a deep fault or split (Like the San Andreas Fault on the West coast.) In terms of religion, it means a break or separation in beliefs. For example: the Catholic Church that the Blessed Virgin was born without sin. If a section of Catholics all banded together claiming NOT to believe in the Immaculate Conception, and that was enough to make them want to form their own anti-IC version of the "same" religion, it would be a schism, because that tenet is imperative to the present-day Roman Catholic Church. Then the Vatican would declare the group that broke away to be "heretics". It's a deep, irreparable split, like a divorce.

Generally, a schism happens when one group of people in a religion no longer recognizes the authority of the religion's earthly head, but still continues to belief the religion's doctrinal and moral teachings.

That's the Catholic understanding of schism, anyway. There are churches, such as the Eastern Orthodox churches, that are in schism with Rome -- but their doctrinal and moral teachings are nearly identical to ours.

For that reason, Catholics and Orthodox can still receive the sacraments from each other's priests, and can still attend each other's Masses in order to fulfill their Sunday obligation.

A schism is when a person creates a group contrary to the teachings or doings of the majority. The best example was Martin Luther and the Reformation. Luther and his followers believed differently from the majority, which at the time, was the Roman Catholic Church.

When one group of religionists has a difference of opinion ( usually about who gets to be ultimate leader of said religious group. the minority forms it's own cult and takes adherents away from the main group, this is called a schism. Check Dictionary.com for a more PC answer.
