Go Japanese, they are reliable, affordable and cheap and easy to fix. I recommend for a new driver a small car, so:
Honda Civic
Toyota Corolla -probably your best bet for your price range. Look for late 90's.
Nissan Sentra- also probably w/in your price range

A great starter car would be a nissan sentra or a toyota corella. Both get great gas milage have low overhead and have proven to be reliable. Good luck.

Something big and cheap. Probably a late 80's or early 90's Pontiac. Those hold up forever.

Go to Consumer Reports for the car to buy. In our opinion, they have never been wrong. You need a reliable car and trust me they will lead you in that direction. Happy hunting!

recommend toyota corolla or tercel, check for bad oil leaks underneath or stinky coolant and or just plain filthy neglegence. stay away from these problems.
