I need to renew my passport because it expires in April. To renew it, the State Department wants me to mail my current passport to them. I was wondering if they will return my current passport or if they will keep it.

For sentimental reasons, I would like to keep my passport. I have a few stamps and a visa that I would like to have as a keepsake. Plus the picture is awesome.

Has anyone renewed their passport recently? Did they send you your old passport back along with the new one?

If they mail it back I'll gladly send it to them to expedite the process, but if they keep it I think I might report it lost so I can hold on to it.

Hi, they return your old passport with the booklet cancelled by stamped cutouts. If there are still valid visas inside, they only stamp out the covers.

Hope this helps.

they will return the old one after it has been stamped "cancelled" with the issue date of the new one marked in it, plus they will punch a couple of holes in the ID number at the bottom of the picture page.
