Solid state inverters are made up of electronic components, rotary inverters are made up of a DC motor that moves an AC alternator so it transform DC to AC.
Rotary inverters weight more, they are also less efficient and they need more space.

Solid state inveters are quiet, efficient, and reliable.
We had rotary inverters on our Convair 580s and we were always changing them. We could hear it over the engines running.
Rotary inverters are only about 20% efficient (I think solid state is like 80%, but I'm not sure)
