If you can see it you can wipe it out. Try a cotton ball dampened with rubbing alcohol (and then the excess squeezed out, so it doesn't drip into the ear canal and sting). some cats simply have waxy ears and don't clean well.

However, if you clean it out and it gets dirty again quickly, or if it's reddened/cat shaking his head/scratching ears I'd take him in to the vet in case it's an ear infection.

Ear mites have to be transmitted directly from another pet (dog, cat etc) and if there's been no new pets in the house and he doesn't go outside, the chances of him having ear mites are pretty low to nonexistant.

It's possible your cat has ear mites if they are getting dirty and looking dark brown or black. You can get some ear cleaner from the pet section and take a ball of cotton and wipe the outside of the ear. Be careful with sticking anything into the cat's ears and if this continues get some ear mite medicine or see a vet if that doesn't help.

Cats ears are never dirty if they are healthy. The dirt, if it looks kinda goopy and black, it's not dirt, it's ear mites. If you want to see if it is mites or dirt, just squeeze the base of your cats ear gently as if you are trying to close the ear hole. if this hurts the cat and makes it rub it's ear alot with it's foot, it's mites. If the cat just pulls away, or enjoys it, it's dirt.
Mites hurt and itch and go very very deep in the ear.

your kitty may be having ear-mite infestation. That could develop into a real ear infection. You need to take your cat to the vet - they will take a smear sample, clean your cat's ears and give you an ear ointment to apply to your cat's ears.

I would call your vet. and ask. I was told that it may be ear mites. If it is mites it can really annoy the cat. There is medicine you can by for mites and I think it's at the pet stores.

it could be ear mites. i just had to do this to my cat of 8 months old. when you clean your cats ears get a white piece of paper and rub the gross stuff on the paper and if its ear mites you will see little things actually moving on the paper. they sale little ear mite treatments at Wal-mart for like 3 bucks.

Could be lice or fleas causing it. Or mild ear infection. Cleaning the outer part with Q tips is ok. If it presist take to it to the Vet.

Take him to a vet, he might have mites or another type of infection and need to have them flushed. Don't do it yourself, you could hurt him and make it worse, Good Luck.
