Ok, now the weather is cold and dark after 4, when we have finished tea with our children we have to keep them amused until their parents collect at 6ish. Normally we would go outside but once sun goes in its soooo cold out there.
Some of the poor things have been with us since 7.30 that morning, so are getting really fed up of our resources by then.
What do you do at your setting. Anyone think of any circle games, board games etc

Here are a few ideas. 1) There is a game I like to play where one will ask random questions which the answers are in plain sight or what the kids see every day. For example, "What color is Sarah's sweater?" or "Who is taller- Matthew or Kimmy?" Keep the questions going quickly and randomly and really be creative with them. An advanced version would be that they have to guess without looking at first. 2) Another game one would react as mirror image of another. 3) A game called "clay face." In this game there is a "sculptor" and a face that will be "sculpted." It's very simple. If the sculptor sculpts a pig nose on you, you have to do your best to keep that pig nose. If he sculpts your eyes to droop, you have to do your best to keep them drooped. It doesn't have to be limited to the face. You can be posed like a manican. This is a silly game. 4) In another game one can start off a drawing and pass it to another person to draw. Pass the drawing around till everyone gets a chance. 5) In this final game turn out all the lights and close all the shades. Have the kids take turns find objects in the room using flashlights. Just call out an object, then find it by shining the light onto it.
I have many others but, this should do for starters. I hope I explained them well enough to understand. Well, have fun.

We always find this part of the day difficult as the children are tired, staff are tired. You should try not to think of this part of the day as being the end of the day as children still need stimulating & its good for parents to see good activities happening as it will give them an insight into what their children have been doing. What the parents see happening when they arrive they will assume that this is what their children do all day.
We gave up with group activities as children are distracted by parents arriving disrupting the whole thing. We save at least one good planned activity for this part of the day, with a selection of freeplay activities. not only does the time go quick but the children are calm & encourages parents to become involved as they arrive. Sometimes the children dont want to leave as they are engrosed in the activity which is a little annoying for the parents who are in a hurry, but is good news for the nursery as it shows that the children are happy to stay.
The type of activity we do varies from one day to the next from art to water to messy.

Dear Anni***

You are open at 7:30am - 18:00? Do you get overtime pay from 17:00-18:00???

In South Africa we are open from 07:30-17:00. If the mom's are late, they are fined per half hour of being late.

I cannot believe the children stay there ALL DAY!! Our pre-schoolers only stay from 07:30-12:00. For this time, the mom's pay R625.00 per month per child, in dollars $6250.
From 12:00 (the older children) from schools arrive, until 5:00 same amount!!!

Why don"t you arrange videos for that time period, specially when its so cold, under the duvets. Each mom can take turns in bringing a suitable video for each day. Or read a book to the children, their choice. Do you not have internet cafe' corners.!!

take advantage of the cold weather... explore the differnces in the world between summer and winter, look after the wildlife... watch the stars...as long as you are wrapped up warm... and then come inside,, have a cosy space rigged up with blankets... talk about all the differnces,, drink hot chocolate( warm) eat toast and jam..
or go the other way.. have a indoor beach day to remember summer... have picnics, sand trays, ice cubes,,
theres always the winter olympics put the names of the countries in a hat and let the children choose , set up games to compete with others in the class a sneaky way of learning geography! remember to always intill the code of the olympics,
Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.
.

challange the children to come up with some ideas for them selves, have an ideas board to allow them to contribute.
hope these ideas help...

Table activities (i.e. blocks, painting, coloring) are all good ways of keeping them occupied. Other things are music (which is usually in the AM, but do it in the PM). Kids love dancing and duck duck goose, hot potato, etc. Give the kids some choices for the PM. Although it may cause for more clean up, open up the learning areas (housekeeping, etc) for them to play until parents arrive. Give them this opportunity until about 5 or so, then clean up and have quiet games or table toys.

After the p.m. snack the children do one group activity. After that it is freeplay. With parents coming in and children leaving it is difficult to do activities with the children. We allow them to each pick their own. Sometimes they still interact in small groups of two to four children. Often I use this time to start huge projects that take alot of time. That way they can work on it every afternoon if they choose.

At our Campus's Children's Center, we go outside, rain snow or shine. And we live near Buffalo so we get a lot of snow! At least 45 minutes outside twice a day is extremely important for young children and gross motor development! Please don't deprive them of that. And it doesn't have to be just running around out there. Bring out a wagon full of ribbons, shiny scarves, buckets, pots, pans, spoons, etc.. for them to play with.

Hi!

Funny this.... it happened to us yesterday!! It was bloomin freezing wasn't it? (I assume you're in the UK).

Some of the older children wanted to still play outside, so the girls (staff) got their hats and gloves out and played with them!

Some of the children wanted to watch a DVD.

Some made a 'den' with blankets and sheets over the climbing frame and read each other stories.

Another group got the Hama beads out and played for over an hour making Hama pictures for their Mums and Dads.

Plus at this time of year we're making Christmas Cards, Gift Tags, Christmas Crackers, New Year Calendars etc.

Have you got a parachute? The kids really love that and there's lots of games you can play with it.

If you're really desperate, go to our website www.xlchildcare.co.uk and leave me your details and I'll get back to you with more ideas.

Best of luck!
