As a music teacher, I'm more interested to find out if you can sing. I don't put as much importance on the song choice. Excpet I dislike hearing auditioners with songs like the ABC song, Happy Birthday, The Star Spangled banner. It makes me think they didn't take the time to learn something new.

Stick with songs from musicals. There are so many and they are GREAT for tenors. Think West Side Story, Bye Bye Birdie, Pippin, Oliver, Godspell, The King and I, The Wizard of Oz, and on and on. If not from musicals, then folk songs like Shenandoah, Loch Lomond.

Go to the library and look up Broadway solos and see what your library has to offer.

The "Great American Songbook" isn't just the 40s and 50s. It goes back to the 20s and 30s.

What will work best for you depends on what you like to sing and can sing convincingly and best. Are you good at ballads? How about up-tempo songs? Character pieces?

I'm not a popular music expert, but I would try to sing something classic by one of the greats such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, or Rogers & Hammerstein.

You might also want to take a look at YouTube or in a record store and see what videos /recordings they have of great performers of american standards such as Frank Sinatra, Barbara Cook, or Judy Garland.

Do they have to go back that far? If not, you could also look at Copland and Ives and Michael Head.
