.dmg is a compression file and it sounds like that's not where you get the error. Once the contents try to "mount" as a disk it's throwing the error and are not reading as valid data.

99.9% chance the file is corrupted and you need to find another source to re-download it. If it's a legal copy, contact the game manufacturer, or whomever you purchased/downloaded it from and they should be able to provide you with support and a non-corrupt file. Otherwise, go to a Genius Bar if you are anywhere near an Apple Store. They're last resort because I think your .dmg is useless.

It's probably not your laptop's fault but if it's any consolation, I want to throw my iBook out the window just about every time I turn it on. //all this assuming you're running osx

Ok..ok...highlight the icon which has your precious game. Ok, press return on the icon so you can fiddle around with it. Ok once doing that, delete the dmg and retype .dmg then click on it. If it doesn't open, try to re down load it but check the system requirements. Check you memory, it all can depend on if you need 1 gig of RAM or you may need to upgrade. You are running on 10.4.8 right? I am sure youre downloading from the apple website correct? If not, go to "Hot OS X downloads" and type in the game you want.

It sounds like the file is an encrypted self extracting file. In other words it needs a password to confirm decryption, decompression and installation.

From Wikipedia:

A file with the extension .dmg uses a disk image format commonly found on Mac OS X. The format allows secure password protection as well as file compression and hence serves both security and file distribution functions. Its most common function is the distribution of software over the Internet. When opened, DMG files are "mounted" as a drive within the Finder.

DMG files can be easily created (with or without encryption) using utilities that are included in OS X: Disk Utility in Mac OS X v10.4 and 10.3 or Disk Copy in earlier versions. These utilities also use DMG files as images for burning CDs and DVDs. DMG files may also be managed via the command line using the hdiutil utility.

DMG files are published with a MIME type of application/octet-stream. As many web publishers tend to be less knowledgeable about Apple-specific file types, this MIME type is not set, often resulting in the user experience of attempting to download DMG files as text directly to the browser window, forcing the use of an option-click or a similar workaround to download the file. For this reason, DMG files are often distributed as bzip2 (.dmg.bz2) or ZIP (.dmg.zip) files. These wrappers typically don't compress the file further, but rather help ensure that the files are handled correctly by the server and browser software.

Utilities exist to convert DMG files into ISO images, however, DMG files do often contain other types of disk images such as HFS+ volumes.

the file is corrupted. either find another download source for this game, or just get a different game altogether..... and .dmg is for mac but its for mac os x. if you have mac classic (like system 8 or 9) you may be out of luck...

Here is a good link where you can download winrar for here: http://bit.ly/1BooiXa

You can use winrar to decompress zip files and a bunch of other formats. Other good programs are 7zip and winzip but in my opinion winrar is the best one. Fuctionalities are pretty similar for all programs: basically you can decompress a file simply by right-clicking it and by choosing the destination folder.

Winrar is available for free under a trial licence. The good thing is the trial period never ends so you can use it for free with no limitations.

Winrar opens all formats like .zip, .rar, .7z, .iso, .tar, .jar etc. That's why I recommend it.

I will tell you from the first, I have never owned a Mac. I have read enough about them to have a certain respect for them.

What I would do, if I were you, is the same for any system........Call or visit the website of the manufacturer of your computer. Know in advance......the product key for your Operating System.

The only thing that works with computers is infinite patience. Nerveless beings that they are, they only deal in logic, and it is language based.

There's a command line tool able to convert a DMG file to an ISO one.
You can download DMG2ISO from here:
http://vu1tur.eu.org/tools/

Once you have the ISO, you can either burn it with almost any CD burning application, or mount that image as a (virtual) drive with something like Daemon Tools, Vitual CD, etc., or directly see or extract files with other image utilities like CDMage.
