This has already happened. Before they had the bible, they were all lost sheep, so they created a story that would keep their women faithful, their children in fear and their pockets full. Take it away now.....and they'll just create another one. Hopefully the next one has better special effects.

What's your excuse then? You obviously don't believe as Christians do or in the Bible. So since you have such an open mind, what book do you use as a guide? Open minds for Dummies? Sounds like a good book for someone who asks such a judgmental question.

It's obvious from so many responses here that your question has not been well received. Perhaps it's time to get a new guide book for yourself. Hey, the Bible might work fine for you. It already does for millions of people all through out time. All those millions can't be wrong.

Not all Christians have to quote from the bible to get a point across. The Bible is used as a guide and like a map, it's easier to find where you're going with directions. No directions and you end up lost...it has nothing to do with having or not having an open mind.

Whoa, Mudcat, low blow...Y'know, if you throw out the Fundimentalists, the Christian Community has no larger a percentage of closed-minded people that the population at large. Unfortunately, the people who robotically follow the teachings of whackjobs like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Oral Roberts, James Dobson or Ralph Reed are the people who are most prominantly identified as "Christians." There is a lot more to the Christian Community than just the lunatic fringe, and many of us can even quote from the Bible without having it do our thinking for us. God may hurl a few lightning bolts my way, or maybe dump a pile of frogs from the sky for my saying this...but whatever. Most of us Christians know enough not to take every single word of the Bible literally. Everybody who has even a passing familiarity with the Bible knows what Jesus is up to when He expresses His teachings in the form of a parable. Where us normal Christians run afoul of the Twilight Zone wing of Christianity is that we understand that the same thing is done in other parts of the Bible. Things like the Creation Story are also told in a way that the Hebrews of that era could understand--not that they were a stupid people, but would they have understood concepts like the Big Bang, black holes, dark matter or evolution? The Bible is full of good stuff, like a history of the Jewish people, wonderful poetry, some pretty cool battle scenes, and a lot of moral teachings. What it isn't is an absolute history of the entire world, or a reference book to be used in place of thinking for ourselves...or a tool to support prejudices with (If it weren't such a serious problem, it would be funny to listen to these religious equivalents of Rush Limbaugh's "dittoheads" quote Holy Scripture to explain why African-Americans are inferior.).
Anyway, enough ranting...but remember, most of us Christians can be just as logical, rational, and open-minded as most normal Americans.

If civilization did not have a bible to live by then the holy spirit will deal directly with that person. Christians do not have open minds apart from the Lord. A person mind that is stayed on the Lord is kept in perfect peace. In the days of old people did not have bibles and was inspired by God, by his holy spirit.

your question is simply not right, do you know why Christians do have a bible to quote from. But here's the thing if you are a Christian you do not just quote the Bible, you live it. An open mind has nothing to do with wheather you are a Christian or not anyway.

I do not, nor have I ever quoted from the bible. I feel what I believe. Are you asking us to be open minded,so we can listen to what you have to say. I can do that but I am not going to change my mind about being a Christian.

If I were answering questions in a music category, could I quote song lyrics without someone thinking I was clueless?

Could I quote Shakespeare in a literature category without being called closed-minded?

I thank God that He gave us His inerrant and infallible word through the Holy Bible. The Word of God brings us peace, joy and comfort. How open-minded would we be if we kept that all to ourselves? The use of scripture is always appropriate; especially in the R & S category.

"The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever."
Isaiah 40:8

your question shows that you have no open mind towards everyone since you are discounting Christians. Are you living a double standard since you are implying that you are open minded or what? Your question cannot be answered because it is based on a wrong premise. However, I will tell you that many the world's foundational sciences were established by CHRISTIANS. The American founding fathers who made up one of the greatest forms of government were about 95% CHRISTIANS. Most of the early universities in the U.S. were founded by CHRISTIANS. Many of the early hospitals were founded by (yes, say it!) CHRISTIANS. Main legal principals of law were also established by (any open minded person can say )CHRISTIANS. The neglect of Christianity lead to the dark ages but the revival of CHRISTIAN principals lead to the Renaissance. By the way, what good things have come from atheists?

Im a christain and if you check my Q&A you will see that never once have I quoted the bible(just my opinion) nor have I shoved any of my beliefs in someones face. Besides being open minded means to be willing to aknowledge that your beliefs may not be right. Are you open minded enough to do that?..I doubt it.

I am though, you may be right there may not be a God, but oh well I'll pray anyway til I die just to be on the safe side.
