swollen. This is destroying my social life. Let me explain: When I am dry (not retaining water) my face looks chiseled and handsome. But when I retain water, my face swells up like a chipmunk and loses its definition and attractiveness. When I am dry women are always smiling at me, saying "hello" and asking me for directions. When I get bloated, the reaction is completely different. You would think they are looking at a COMPLETELY different person. Suddenly, I become invisible to women of all ages. What were previously smiles, are now frowns. In short I get treated like a leftover- a second- class citizen. Have you ever heard of this problem (explaining this to people is like trying to explain to a person from the middle ages that the world is round)? And is there anything I can do to cure or treat this nasty water retention?

The best way to get rid of water is to drink MORE water. Also, watch how much sodium is in what you eat- sodium will cause you to retain fluid.

This sounds like some kind of allergic reaction. Is it a response to the 'size' of a meal or the 'content' of the meal? How long does the edema last? How long has this been occurring? Is it getting worse? Do you have any known food allergies? Other allergies? Is there a family history of allergies? There are lots of questions a qualified health care provider needs to ask before any rational advice can be given.

Find a good doctor (M.D.), chiropractor (D.C.), naturopathic physician (N.D.) or certified clinical nutritionist (CCN) that has knowledge in nutrition/allergies and go from there.

Best wishes and good luck.

It is very possible that you may be sensitive to gluten. Gluten is found in all wheat products. The first indication that you have this sensitivity is water retention and swelling. Try going a few days without flour products and see what happens.

You did not say whether you eat a lot of salt in these meals, salt will make you retain water. Try cutting back on salt and see if that helps.
