I agree - both are very good but the K10D looks a bit better. My favorite review sites don't list the K10D yet ( http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html and http://www.dpreview.com/reviews ) but from what I've read elsewhere, it's a good camera and the Shake Reduction works as advertised.
Another one to consider is the Canon 20D. This camera is almost as good as the 30D that replaced it this Spring, and it may well be my current favorite for under $1000 (It has 'just' 8 megapixels and lacks built-in image stabilization, but it's a step above the D80 and K10D in many other respects).
While you're still deciding, also take the lens selection and upgrade path into consideration. Does the body you want have the lens(es) you want? And if you plan on upgrading the body or lenses in a few years, give 2 bonus points to Canon/ Nikon.
Also, play around with these cameras in a shop. The 'feel' of the camera could well be a deciding factor - let's face it, all 3 of these cameras are good enough for 95% of all photographers.
I personally use a Nikon D200 and I'm encouraging my wife to get the D80. (She constantly has to fight the urge to drop her point & shoot and grab the D200 out of my hands... and I constantly have to fight the urge to bludgeon her when she does.) My choice for the Nikon brand (back in the film days) was determined by their lens selection. I've gradually upgraded, and since I now have some great lenses to share, the D80 is a no brainer.

Pentax K10D is the best Sub $1,000 DSLR out there.
Better weather sealing then D200
Better anti-shake in camera then Sony
Better Dust removal then Olympus
Tougher body (Magnesium) then D80 (plastic)
faster/better contiuous shooting then all except D300

i really love my d80, but i'd say the k10d is a little better. image quality should be comparable, but the pentax has weather sealing, a dust removal function, and probably most importantly a built in shake reduction system that lets you shoot at lower shutter speeds. i chose the d80 since i already have some nikon lenses and a decent flash.

for the image high quality, that's obtrusive nikon is the winner, only as much as you with the funds, d80 is greater effective than d40, with the aid of fact that's an get admission to point for nikon in dslr, even with the undeniable fact that that's incredibly no longer costly
