My first comment is to MISTERSATO! Illegal immigrants do the jobs Americans won't do, because they are low wage jobs that Americans can not afford to do. Illegals take the low wage jobs and live off the state. The money they do make, they send back to Mexico, or wherever they came from. They are using American jobs to fund their own government!
I agree that the American citizens should NOT have to learn Spanish. I live in New Mexico and all the good jobs require that you be bilingual. So, yes, I feel we are being forced to conform to their ways. I lived in California and I was told that I had to take at least two years of Spanish in order to graduate. My husband and his siblings were told the same here in New Mexico. This debate has been going on for years, but it does seem to be getting worse.

Actually yes, they do have to learn the language to get anywhere. If you look at the ones that don't speak English they live in trashy trailers while the ones that do speak it live in at least a more or less nice neighborhood. Let me ask you something, what makes you think Spanish is going to become mandatory in the U.S.? Sure there are a lot of people speaking Spanish but that doesn't mean the whole country has to do it. If you go back to the times of massive immigration from Europe, the first generation usually didn't speak English right away and they even had their own neighborhoods where they spoke their native language (German, Italian, etc.) Now, let me warn all those that are fixing to give me thumbs down that I gave an educated answer and if you do so then you will just show that you have no way of arguing back and therefore TRY to hurt me.

Spanish will never become mandatory- and English shouldn't be- either. Since ALL schools in this country are based in English, it's inevitable that all the kids that go through them- will learn a certain amount of English (and it's the law here- that ALL children must get an education). So as time passes, the longer an immigrant lives here, the more they'll "assimilate" into the larger society, & the more they'll speak & act like everyone else. It make take a few generations...-but it always happens.

Most high schools have Spanish courses that are mandatory or optional for students to take. I had to take 3 years of Spanish in middle school. then another 3 in high school, and I had the option of taking an advanced Spanish course. I'm still sh*tty at Spanish. It would impossible for every American to learn Spanish. Primarily due to the medical conditions out there, ADD, ADHD, mental retardation, etc etc. All these factors prevent people from effectively learning.

Yes it is wrong if it is mandatory to speak Spanish!!
I have no problem with learning another language, I speak German fluently. America is the melting pot and has millions of immigrants, everybody knows that.
Why should Americans learn to speak Spanish just to speak with all the illegals in this country?? Shouldn't they learn to speak English if they want to work and live in this country???? Shouldn't they conform to our society???

English should be the ONLY option ANYWHERE in this country. There should be no "For Spanish type 2", or "Spanish menus available". Anyone wanting to live here needs to learn our language. Our government needs to grow a spine and start enforcing some of these things. It's already gotten waaay out of hand just look at the two American flags at the bottom of this page. One for English and one for Spanish. WTF is all I can say about that.

Not requiring Spanish has certainly NOT stopped them from coming in the past. Do you really believe that just because we now offer information in Spanish that it will make more of them come? English is NOT the native language of this country. Ask any Native American. WE made the natives learn our language after we kicked them out of their own country.
Maybe we are dealing with "what goes around comes around?"

First, no one is making learning Spanish mandatory. Where do you get your information, Rush Limbaugh? Bill "the Pinhead" O'Reilly?
Second, the U.S. is supposed to be about freedom and the pursuit of happiness. Maybe it hasn't been that way lately, but that was the vision put forth by Thomas Jefferson, and it's the vision that truly patriotic Americans are trying to get back to. If some other guy wants to speak Spanish and it doesn't hurt you in any direct, meaningful way, then get off his case.
Third, don't assume that undocumented immigrants are harmful to our society. They do a lot of jobs that American citizens don't want to do, they pay taxes (no one can escape sales taxes, for example), and contribute to the country's GNP.

Oh that's terrible... What are we going to do now? They are asking us to use our brains more!
First, check your sources... You can't force students to take math in their senior years much less you'll be able to force them to learn spanish.
Second, so if people had to learn a new language, wouldn't that be a good thing? Most people from most countries in the world speaks at least 2 languages. Let alone Europeans who usually speak at least 3 or 4 languages.
Even most sudanese young people living in refugee camps in Kenya (in extreme poverty) know how to speak 4 or 5 languages.
So would it really be that bad that Americans would be expected to speak another language?
I would disagree if it would have to be spanish, I mean, if people wouldn't have any choice. But it would be a great idea that people in this country would learn at least one language of their choice...
