I am interested in getting a German Shepard puppy. Can someone please provide me with a good website or link to a good website on pure breed German Shepards? I know German Shepards have been know to be mixed with other breeds, undermining thier quality and I'm looking for a good pure breed German Shepard. Also if you may know the answer to this how much might I be expected to pay for one preferably male.

Thank You for your help.

The absolute best place to start researching ANY kind of dog is the American Kennel Club's website, www.akc.org. The link for german shepherds, including info on breed standards, temperament, and care needs, is here: http://www.akc.org/breeds/german_shepherd_dog/index.cfm. Like most established breeds, there's a national breeder's association as well: http://www.gsdca.org/. That's the best source for finding a reputable, responsible breeder in your area.

Before you contact the breeder, make sure you've done your homework and are familiar with the specific needs of your chosen dog -- how much outdoor space and exercise they need, medical conditions they're prone to, and so forth. Any responsible breeder will want to know they're placing a dog in a home where he'll be properly cared for. They'll most likely ask you how much home and yard space you have, how active you are, how much time the dog will spend alone, whether you have any other pets, and how familiar you are with the breed. A serious breeder spends an extraordinary amount of time and resources on not only their own dogs, but also contributing to the welfare of the breed as a whole - breeding for healthy bloodlines, tracking genetic conditions, et cetera - so you can bet they're very particular about who they place their puppies with.

You may also want to let them know that you don't intend to breed or show the dog competitively, and are thus looking for a "pet quality" dog - good breeders often have waiting lists for show-quality puppies, so this may increase your chance of being able to purchase from them as soon as possible. Prices may vary widely depending on your location, but definitely expect to spend upwards of $500. Good luck!

You can check the American Kennel Club website for links. You can also search under german shepard breeders in your area. The other thing you might consider is asking some veterinarians in your area if they can recommend any reputable breeders of shepards. Also look up breed clubs on the web. they usually post info about dog shows. Go to a few dog shows in your area so you can speak directly to the breeders and see their credentials usually posted in the breeders area of the arena. Pet quality dogs won't always be as beautiful as the show quality dogs but they'll still be good and healthy. Any quality breeder should guarantee the pup's health. Pick up a copy of Dog Fancy magazine. They list dog shows in the back of the mag. Real easy way to locate date & location of any shows in your locale. Good Luck finding your pup.

If you are thinking about getting a puppy please check the shelters. Even when a purebred is considered. You wouldn't believe how many are out there. When someone bought a puppy for a gift etc. and decided against it, were do they end up? Unless they weren't so lucky and got taken to the vet to be put down just because they didn't want it. Don't just try one there is alot of shelters out there, even Gremen Shepard safe havens, rescues. Hope I helped, not only you but some lost sole looking for a warm and loving home for the holidays.

For cost of a male puppy, it really depends on the breed. I've seen everything from $600-1,000.

this breed has serious hip dysplasia problems from constant in-breeding..don't buy over the internet and require to see papers from the breeder that determine the hips(parent's hips) are ok when you see OFA good, that's what they are talking about
