Microsoft monopolized the market so some extent. All main software was made for windows first. It became an industry standard because microsoft came up also with the disk operating system. Ask your self this...are the applications that I am going to use avaliable to me on a mac or Linux OS.

Linux didn't hit till later which unfortunately made it much too late. Microsoft had teamed up as you know, with IBM, then they started to really push their business solutions all over the world, and the "IBM Clones" were born (dell, gateway.....). Plus, back when I was in elementary school, all we had was Microsoft windows (well, technically many started with apple). But Microsoft had attacked the school industry so that way, that's all that kids knew how to use. I do love Microsoft XP, but I am having some concerns with some of their recent decisions in Vista after I beta tested it.

Microsoft Marketing.

And once they establish a quasi monopoly all the rest becomes hard to choose for corporate environments.

Many unix users including some hardcore Linux developers I know love their mac a lot.

If you get one of the new Intel-based Macs, you can install all three operating systems if you wish. Wikipedia would likely have best explanation of why the M$ operating systems ended-up dominating the market.
