Nobody likes the word amnesty, so how about they earn their citizenship a different way? Why not have the law abiding immigrants serve at least four years in the US military and give them their legal status when they have been honorably discharged. The illegals that have a criminal history should be deported. After all, they all say that they love this country.

I wouldn't call your suggestion the solve all but I would call it a start. Taking jobs away from American workers simply because they can accept a lower wage is no path to citizenship in my book either. Fighting for a legitamate cause through our military would do much more towards gaining my resolve, yet joining our armed forces under Bush seems more like a death wish to anyone including illegals rather than a statement of loyalty. What we need is an enforcement of existing laws and prosecutions derived therein in order to curb the existing illegal subterfuge that persists to this day. Stay tuned..

Enlisting in the American armed forces is a legitimate way to become an American. It is legal and I for one respect it. I would not turn my back on an American soldier. It is the illegals that are not willing to give something for this country that i want out. ALL people from around the world have a chance at becoming a member of the American family. Some are just to lazy to go about it the right way. These soldiers might one day tell other illegals to either get out of America or enlist too. The thought of that happening just makes me smile so wide.

Yes, it's true. More than 31,000 members of the U.S. armed forces are not American citizens. After returning from honorably serving in the United States armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, non-U.S. citizen Servicemembers are put through a lengthy process to obtain U.S. citizenship – often, it is only after their death that they are given immediate citizenship.

Why the Federal Government doesn't deport illegals who commit crimes is beyond me...it seems simple-citizenship should be automatic if they serve in the military and a criminal history should make being deported automatic. There's simply not nearly enough immigration people hired which is also seems crazy. Hire some people for immigration and borders-it'll be good for the economy!

doodlebugg... I am not an immigrant, I was born in this country. That makes me a native. Yes, a Native American. Those that we call Native Americans are really known as Anishinabe, Cherokee, Dakota, Lakota, Ute, etc... The question is regarding illegal immigrants and not natives.

It would make sense, and they can already earn their citizenship this way according to immigration law, except that the military does not allow them to enlist. You'd think with the recruiting difficulties, they'd make exceptions to their regulations.

Legal immigrants are welcome to enlist in military service and have been for a long time.

Illegal immigrants have no status and enlistment in military service is not an option open to them. As a veteran I don't think it would be a particularly good idea to open military service to illegal aliens. It would impact the quality of our soldiers, sailors and airmen and would turn the services into something less than they are now.

I favor finding good solutions for illegal immigrants who are otherwise law-abiding to obtain legal status and citizenship if they want it. Once they have done so I think the services would welcome them.

If everyone who was an immigrant had to join the military, then the only people left would be the Indians and the Mexicans. Indians were here first, and most Mexicans are their ancestors. Perhaps those who think that they should be deported should simply find somewhere else to live rather than to try to push out someone who has just as much, if not more, right to be here. It's not enough to come and take their land, you have to put requirements on what they have to do to be able to stay on their land. It is simple minded, stingy people like this who make me sick. Todd Maz, they wouldn't be illegal, if they hadn't been forced away in the first place.

Absolutely NOT!! Faster citizenship is already offered to those who are already in the process of obtaining citizenship if they serve in our armed forces. THEY are NOT illegal however. Illegal immigrants have NOT given their oath to this country, are NOT loyal to the USA, are criminals and do not deserve ANY easy way to citizenship. THEY "BROKE" the law!!! THEY should be punished and DEPORTED!! ILLEGALLY entering the USA "IS" a CRIME!! They are ALL "criminals"!! gmab!!

Uhh... first, you mention "illegals", then go on to mention "law abiding immigrants"... what, exactly, are you talking about? If you mean to say, "law-abiding ILLEGAL immigrants", then you're out of your mind! That's what we call an "oxymoron", dear.

I don't want, nor do I need, some foreign criminal "defending" this Nation. By the way, ALL illegals should be deported.
