I have a kind of silly question, I have 2 kids and I never did this I wondered why do people say "Oh, I have a 22 mth old"? Why don't u say, my baby is...ayr and 10mths or almost 2? if ur over a yr (12mths) then say a yr and...3mths or whatever it is. my baby is 24 mths old. NO-how'bout he's 2yrs old? when does it stop? well, my son is,156 mths old ha!ha!ha! or 13yrs old. HA! I'm sorry I just find this so funny.

I TOTALLY agree. I think it is so ridiculous when someone refers to there childs age in months. I understand when they are under 1 year old or even just a few months older than 1 y/o. I saw someone on this site last week who refered to there daughter as a 34 month old and I was thinking "are you serious, she's almost 3 years old"

Imagine if you asked a child how old they were and instead of saying "I'm this many" and holding up there 3 fingers, they said "my mommy says I'm 34 months."

LOL I find it funny too, so don't apologize. When will they start saying years instead of months. Oh, BTW, my oldest is 112 months. J/K!, she's 9 and a half. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I think it's mainly because of the rate of growth. See, an 18 mo old is quite a bit bigger than a 12 mo old. Toddlers that age tend to grow a little every 2 weeks. Also the emotional development - or the expectations of it, is a bit different at 20 months old that a 14 month old... and so on..
And last but not in the least, blame it on the clothes size. We buy 12 mo size, and 18 mo size and 24 mo size clothes. After that it's 2T 3T 4T 5T 6S 7S ... etc... I think it's mainly based on the physical and emotional developmental issue.
I actually tell people my baby is 20 months old, cuz if I say a year old they wander how come she knows to recite the alphabet and sing the National Anthem... (which she makes me sing every night as a lullaby - no kidding!) she didn't do that at 12 mo, this has been going on since she turned 18 mo old.
I hope that answers your question some.

LOL LOL LOL........This is the best question yet I've been wondering that same thing for quite some time, just never got up the nerve to ask it. I have so many friends that use the same phrases when telling the age of there child, I don't my baby is 4 months now and I've never said that, I've always told the exact age if he's about to turn another month I don't even say that because he's still not officially there yet, unless the question is asked then I'll say something like in a month or 6 weeks or something of that nature.

Because the month system of measuring age for the first two years of life is commonly used in the medical and psycological fields. Yeah - the kid is a year old for a whole 12 months. But a lot happens in that 12 month span - they learn to walk, talk, social skills, etc. Lumping them all into the "1 year old" stage is rather vague. Doctors want to know the month your kid learned to walk. So talking months, it is easier to respond to the questions a physician will ask than just stating "oh she was a year old". Slow development could be an indicator of something else being wrong, but if 13 months is "normal" for a child to learn to walk, but the child doesn't take their first steps until 20 months, then just stating that "year old" age thing could cause a doctor to miss the indication.

I used to think it was all funny, until I had a baby. Now I totally understand.

U r not the only one . I have a 3 month old but when he turns 1 I will not say he is 12 months hell i get tired of trying to see how many monts he is now. I cant stand that I think they do it so people won't think there child is behind so if ur child is 12 months he/ she should be doing this but if he is 15 months he/ she should be doing this.

I think it's just because specific milestones can happen month by month in the early years, as well as certain growth spurts. I think it gets silly after age 2. "Oh, my son is 26 months..." yeah, he's a little over 2, we get it. I'm not counting the months anymore after my daughter turns 2.

I really don't know. My son is actually 20 months but I always tell people 2 or almost 2. At a 12 months we switched to a year & at 16 months we said year & a half we just satrted saying 2. The only ime I give his age in months is at his doctors office & at his speech theropy.

Well for me i say that my daughter is 17 months old because i still think of her as my baby...when she reachs 2 years old then i will stop counting the months...but for right now i say that i have a 17 month old and a 5 month old...that is how i am and that is what i choose to say...i am in denial that my daughter is even a toddler

There are a lot of milestones (especially under 2 years) that are month-specific. If my child is 6mo old then someone would ask "oh are they sitting yet" if they are 11mo old then they can ask if they are walking yet, etc. The same goes up to about 2.. after that I don't use the months anymore.

Also.. clothing is still divided by month at that point 18-24mo then 2T or 24mo

I have been trying to figure that out myself the only explanation I can come up with is clothing. Yes that simple because clothing comes in months until they are about 2 I think that's why people say age in months because if you notice after about 2 years old they start to say 2 or 2 and a half.
