You may be referring to the Plymouth Brethren church. They conduct themselves in much the same way as the early church. They have no clergy or paid pastors, just elders. All members are considered equal, yet, as it is written in Scripture, only men are allowed to be elders and teachers. All members may participate in the worship service, provide a song, a prayer, a Scripture verse. Nothing to worry about, not a cult or anything close. They can be legalistic at times and somewhat closed, but they are very much members of the body of Christ.

There are different organisations called Brethren. Two Evangelical denominations, one called the Mennonite Brethren, and the other called Brethren Assemblies. Neither are sects, they are just ordinary Evangelicals. I don't know if yhou are referring to one of those 2 groups? It could be that some of the Australian parliamentarians are members of one of those denominations, in the same way that in England you'll find lots of Church of England people, in Quebec a lot of Roman catholic, and in the USA a lot of Southern Baptists, a lot of Roman Catholics and a lot of Presbyterians. I don't think there is anything special or sinister about it.
However, perhaps I am missing something and there is soome other organisation called "Brethren" that is working on controlling things politically - but somehow doubt it.

Brethren is a plural of brother, although it is rarely used. It is in principle synonymous with "brothers". The term is mainly used within Christianity, either in (rare) reference to a fraternal order or fraternal military order, or to refer to any of several Christian groups/denominations, most of which are Anabaptist-Pietist.
The Anabaptist-Pietist Brethren, and even other Brethren bodies, share many beliefs. Individual articles contain more specific information of the doctrines of various bodies.
This word though existed was not popular until 1893 when Swami Vivekananda used this word in World Parliament of Religions in Chicago, where he delivered a series of lectures. He earned wild applause for beginning his address with the famous words, "SISTERS AND BRETHREN of America." Many people took the dictionaries and searched for the meaning of this word. Thus this word became popular.
So the brethren is the plural of brother and can be applied anywhere and there is not restriction to use it in particular assembly only-.
