People have been robbed, beaten and stabbed after being lucky enough to wait in line for days to purchase one. The kids who make it home with them probably spend much more time playing their video games than worshipping Jesus. I'd like to know the church's position on this. Is the playstaion 3 evil?

Anything that we idolize or make our # 1 priority above everything else is a form of idolatry. This can apply to eating, drinking, sports, sex, playing video games, even work , etc. Jesus said that where your heart is at is where your treasure will be. ( Matthew 6; 19 - 21 ) The extreme lengths that people will go thru to get this game shows where their heart is .

On the other hand, life can and should be fun. We all need recreation. A well balanced life is much more enjoyable than one just devoted to playing or pleasures.

In the same way the television is, or cars are, or new clothes are. Anything that takes the place of God in your life is an idol. Not because of the thing but because of your attitude to it.
Personally I wonder about anyone spending days in line to get a toy, and paying so much for it. But many people have no idea of the depth of suffering in the world that they could relieve with the money they spend on that. - or on an expensive car - or on .....
Edit:
By the way, I agree that life can and should be fun. Life was menat by God to be enoyed. It's just that when you spend such enormous amounts of money on something, - I wonder if that's necessary to have fun.

I certainly think it's one tool Satan is using to bring chaos on the earth and lead people astray. I'm sure he's having a field day with this. Anything that leads to this kind of chaos cannot be of God.

I believe it grieves the heart of God to see people act this way over a material object. Can you imagine how He must be feeling to witness this?

Now if people would just get as excited about God as they do about a ridiculous video game can you imagine the kind of revival we would have?

I don't know anything about playstation, but anything can become an "idol." Yahoo Answers can take us away from spending our time more wisely. We can become obsessed with anything and let it take away from our spiritual lives. I doubt if there's anything unique about the playstation 3 in this regard.

No its not. The kids or someone would have to bow down and give the PS3 praise and worship. But I think the kids and everyone else have enough sense not to do that.

anything can be an idol. if people worship it then it is an idol. just like the gold snake that Moses made. people started worshiping it instead of using it for it's intended purpose and so it was destroyed

No, its plastic and metal. Some people are evil and it is just one more way they demonstrate it. If you want to blame someone, blame the manufacturer who created the shortage. They knew exactly how many they would need and they choose not to have enough to satisfy the demand.
