Why is it that so many white women that have interracial daughters never take them to a black hair salon? This is not meant to be racist or disrespectful. I just think it would solve a lot of problems. I have a niece but I dont know how to tell my sister-in-law that her daughter's hair is a mess

I THINK YOU SHOULD LET THE MOMS TAKE CARE OF THEIR OWN DAUGHTERS !!!
PERIOD !!!
IF THE KIDS ARE NOT IN HARM THEN THEY ARE WELL CARED FOR !!!
AND THE HAIR MAY NOT LOOK LIKE A "MESS" TO THEM !!!

Just be honest. You don't have to say "your daughter's hair is a mess", just say "hey, I know great hair salon that will give her a real cute hairstyle", or something to that extent. I'm sure you sister-in-law is aware that she doesn't know what to do with mixed race hair. It's ok to not know what to do because she is white with a different hair texture than her daughter. Maybe some of the Black women in the family could give her some pointers. I also recommend a book called "Curly Girls" by Lorraine Massey, it has tips for dealing with non-straight hair textures. There is even one section with a white woman who has a mixed child. This book might help.

Lack of experience? Lack of any women in the family who would have taught you about that when you were growing up? Lack of knowledge and awareness? I think you could make a gentle hint to your sister-in-law or maybe have your brother (who is married to her, right?) suggest it. How about offering to take the girl to the salon with you next time you go so you can have a "girls' day out" together?

maybe treat her to a girls day out with you and take her to a saloon and have it styled not cut and maybe the mom will be pleasantly surprised. Or give the girl a gift card to the saloon as a Christmas or birthday present. And then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Good luck

different races have different hair textures period. and there are different hair stylist that specialize in specific hair texture... there are many hair salonss and braiding salons that specialize in african american hair. im white and im a hair stylist and i am currently taking classes on learning how to stlye african american hair because i thinkit is gorgeous and unbelieveable to work with and yes if you do have an interacial child most of the time you dont really know how to work with their kind of hair texture, and thats ok... its normal. i would just casually talk to her about it. dont worry about sounding like a b**** because your not you are just wondering. and for you people tellin her to mind her own business.... thats not cool. this IS a site to ask other people their opinions on the things that you want to know.

I have to agree with you.. i had the bad hair problem all through my child hood and school days and didnt get a perm until i was 17 which was a year ago. My mom didn't how to take care of it because of the simple fact her hair was a diff. texture.

i agree with you, their hair is so pretty and the moms just run a brush through and let them go all pouffy and frizzed out and stuff. Maybe get her some gift certificates for a place you know that does a good job with kids. Then you wouldn't be saying it outright but she would get the hint.

Yeah just be nice about it and let her know. I know you dont want your niece runnin around lookin like a thunder chicken. Maybe you can suggest some products like Lusters, or JUST 4 ME. And disregard the hater comments... they obviously mad cuz they aint got dat "GOOD HURR", or just cant relate and think you tryin to diss a white woman.

It's just a cultural thing. Black women try to make their hair look like white hair, and whites get tans to look darker and "healthier". I'm Black, and date a deeply tanned white girl whose skin is darker than mine. I tell her that all that sun is going to make her skin look like a prune when she gets older, and she looks fine without a tan, but she's just following the social norm.

I had no idea there is a difference in black and white hair stylists. Who would have thought. Better not tell Kramer. Maybe that is his problem with his hair too.

The sites listed below have a lot of members that are the moms
of Mixed-Race kids -- perhaps they can provide hair advice to
your sister-in-law (and you won't have to worry about offending
her -- because the advise will come from someone else) :D :
