We are having trouble house training our new Jack Russel. We have 2 others dogs who are completely trained, however the new puppy is 5 months, and jsut does not get it. We tell her bad and no when she goes in the house, and we put her nose to it, but she goes psycho and yelps and whines even tho we barely touch her, and then we put her outside. We leave her out there a good 15 minutes or longer, and then she comes right back in and poops on the floor minutes later. We continue this all day. She sleeps in a crate at night, and we let her out right now about every hour and a half, yet she still has quite few accidents a day in the house. I am out of ideas of what to do.

An untrained dog should be crated at all times unless she is eating or outside going potty. It is not cruel, it is the fastest and easiest way to train unless you like a soiled carpet and smelly house. When you do take her out of the crate to go potty get really excited and give lots of praise as you are taking her out. When you see her going outside give her the command that you will use for potty like "go potty" or "hurry up." Say that everytime she goes so she will associate the action with the word and she will eventually do it on command. When she eats she must immediately go out to potty and not come back in until she goes. 15 minutes is not long enough for a dog that is not house broken. Also puppies can only hold it for 1 hour per month of age so don't wait too long to take her out or she will begin to go in the crate. If she has an accident don't rub her nose in it, dogs cannot put two and two together. You can't correct her unless you catch her in the act and then you just give a firm no or shake a coke can filled with pennies and take her to the correct location to potty. When she does it in the right place lavish her with praise aftewards. One more note, if you want to leave her out of her crate during the day she must be leashed and in your sight at all times, so that you can correct any accidents immediately.
Good Luck

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aL1xm

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

#1 rubbing his nose in it isn't going to do you any good becauce he wont know why he's being punished. When you take puppy outside to go potty and he does, make sure you praise him with a treat and let him know he did good! Everytime there after too, make it a real big deal, and he'll start doing his best to make you happy and to get that treat! All dogs, especially puppies, need to run and play alot in the fresh air so that they're tired. You have alot of responsibility when you're blessed with those little fuzzy bundles. Take care of them, give them all the love and attention that they deserve. Hope I gave you some insight.

Jack Russel Terriers are VERY smart and VERY stubborn. They turn everything into a battle of wills, so you have to be firm, patient and consistent. Ignore the screaming tantrums she has, she know if she's loud you'll leave her alone, so she is actually training you. When she objects to something, do it more, you will be desensitizing her to whatever it is and estabishing yourself as "boss".
Keep her on a leash tied to you all the time. You can catch her in the act and take her out. The mess stays in a small area, so you don't find "presents" all over.
When you catch her yell "NO" and run her outside. Praise her even if nothing else comes out.
Take her out after meals, naps and after she's had to "hold it". Go out with her on the leash and ignore everything but bathrooming. No playing. Say over and over "go potty" until she does, then praise like crazy and go into the house. She has to learn the difference between potty and play time.
She will eventually learn to go on command, so you don't have to guess when she has to go, just take her out, give the command and you don't have to worry. You also won't have to wait forever for her to finish.

buy a crate, and put in a doggie door and push the crate up against it.. it will allow the puppy to still have be able to come in where it is most comfortable as well as train her to go out side.. She will not make a mess is her comfort zone. It seems like to much but it has worked for me and I have 3 Golden's.

1. DO NOT FORCE YOUR DOG'S NOSE INTO ITS OWN MESS
2. She needs to be crated anytime you cannot keep eyes on her
3. JRTs are notorious for being strong willed - you need to be stronger willed
4. You need to go outside with her everytime and praise praise praise (jump up and down, clap, say "GOOD POTTY" in a high pitched voice) when she does eliminate outside.
5. When you catch her making a mistake in the house (because your eyes will be on her all the time), say NO! loudly and scoop her up and take her outside and put her down on the spot where she should go and "Go Potty".

She needs to go outside first thing in the morning, after she eats, after she exercises, and just about every hour until she understands where she needs to go. This means you need to go with her.

Keep with the crate training, and learn more about your role as pack leader.

http://www.leerburg.com has articles, podcasts, etc. that could help you learn the ins and outs of training your new dog.

Also, having 3 dogs creates a new dynamic in the pack. You might want to read about that too.

Good luck. JRT's are awesome.

She should be in the crate whenever you can't watch her. That means not just when you are sleeping but when you are not home or are too busy to watch her. You say you leave her out and you let her out. Do you just let her out in the yard on her own? Try going out with her on a leash stay with her until she goes. When you see her circling in the house like she is preparing to go take her outside and stay with her until she goes. If she has an accident in the house do not put her nose in it. If you see her go tell her "NO OUTSIDE POTTY" and take her outside immediately. If she has an accident and you do not witness it unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it.

Don't put her nose in it anymore. It is having a bad reaction. You might want to utilize your crate for this training. Start by taking the dog out to a regular spot to potty and praise her when she goes outside. Bring her in and watch her closely. If she starts to circle or sniff like she might be about to pee, scoop her up and take her to the same spot outside and praise her if she pees. Then put her in the crate for a few hrs. As soon as you open the crate, scoop her up and take her outside so she does not have a chance to go potty indoors. Take her to the same outdoor spot and praise her. Repeat. As she gets better, extend her time out of the crate and lessen her time in it. Eventually she should be potty trained. If you decide to try this and it doesn't work, take her to a dog trainer.
