My younger sister has one in her arm and has had it for over 20 years, she is 28. If i remember correctly they inject a dye in your body and then do the scan, the reason the whole body is done, is once you have one you may be more susceptible to more and the dye will show any more that are developed.

The bone scan is to make sure the pain is actually caused by a cyst and not something more ominous. The bone scan itself is not unpleasant. I've had several bone scans years back. This big instrument passes slowly over your body as you lay on a table and the affected area "lights up" showing inflammation. They do the full body because if it is a tumor then they want to make sure you don't have additional tumors in other places that might not hurt yet. The results determine whether they need to do a biopsy and further investigation. If they do need to do additional work-up, then a CT scan is probably next. At age 20 you want to eliminate any chance that the pain is caused by a bone tumor. good luck
