Find an obedience club that offers classes. They will have a puppy class to get you started. You're smart to start now! Check your local pennysaver or paper. Most classes are very inexpensive, fun and build an even deeper bond between you and your new puppy! Good Luck!

Of course enrolling your puppy in obedience class is ideal but if it's not possible for you, clicker/reinforcement training works wonders! For the sit command: basically, place a treat in your hand and make a fist. Place the fist on the bridge of your dog's nose so that your dog is concentrating on the treat and is forced to lean back on its legs. Once the dog sits, click with a clicker that you can buy at a store or use something that will make a clicking noise and reward the dog with a treat. After about 5 or 10 times in which you know the dog will sit once you put your fist on his/her nose, introduce the word "sit". Practice this for at least 10-15 minutes a day until your dog gets it.

When training a puppy the best thing to do is get into a puppy training class. the clas isn't really for the dog, it is about teaching you how to interact with the dog in a way that will ensure you have a good dog. it is all up to you. your puppy is like a wet ball of clay, you shape it how you want, if you skrew up, the dog will turn out hyper or agressive, or have other problems.

i trained my golden retriever to sit in about 10 minutes.

Get some small treats (you are going to use them a lot, so make sure they are small bits so you don't overfeed and make him sick).

First, you have to label the action you want your dog to do, so it knows what you want when you say the word. Lets do Sit for an example.

Hold the treat in your hand so your dog knows its there. Push his butt down into a sitting position, say "Sit" right when you do it (labelling), and then give him a treat and give him lots of praise "Good boy!" over and over, over the top. Repeat this, saying sit everytime you push his butt down, and then giving him a treat and praise. Do it about 20 times. He should catch on quickly.

After the 20 times, Hold the treat up high and say Sit, and see if he does it. If not, repeat the above 10 more times. Be sure to praise ridiculously and get really excited when he does it.

You can do the same thing with Shake, but its easier after you teach him to sit (because he needs to be sitting when he shakes). After he sits, pick up a front paw and say Shake while you shake it. Then praise him and give him a treat. Keep picking it up and saying Shake, then praise and treat. Repeat again 20 times or so. Should work!

The best thing would be to enroll the pup in a Puppy Kindergarten Class. It will learn basic obedience and will learn to socialize with other dogs and people. After successful completion there are more advanced obedience classes the pup can be enrolled in. These classes are so important not just for the obedience but the socialization and you will learn to work with your dog as well.

petsmart and petco both have dog training that is OK for just basic commands like sit..lay down.. roll over.. and leash walking. they also have "puppy" social time, but make sure they have all their vaccinations before going! Just being around other dogs who are trained well can help sometimes.
Just remember it takes time, and lots and lots of patience.. most dogs cant learn something in one day. Good luck
