A good morning routine with a nice sit-down breakfast is best. TV gets the brain in the wrong place. Conversation with family is much better. You can put classical music in the background. Mozart has been proven to stimulate the brain and increase test scores.

Depends on the circumstances,
I as a child watched tv every morning, but I was @ a sitters and was already finished getting ready for the day.
Other children do very much get distracted and you are constantly asking them to do this or do that, because they are otherwise occupied, and many times forget to do the things that they should (like brush their teeth after breakfast)
My rule is no tv until their list of things to do is finished and has checks beside each item. Once all thats done they can watch tv until its time to go.

Hi,

Your gut seems to be telling you that it might not be o.k for your children to watch television before school. I feel that television should be limited to children and that shows they watch should be monitored. I would limit televison to maybe 2 half hour programs after their homework is completed. 1 should be educational and the other can be one of their choice. Sometimes they may only choose to watch their favorite program and leave out the educational one, thus limiting their time to only 30 min. a day on some occassions. The rest of the time can be left up to their imaginations, study, exploration outdoors, reading, writing, computer learning games, etc. I wouldn't suggest allowing them to watch television before school as it my hinder a child's focus on the daily activities they are to face during the day.

My children have very limited television time. They haven't watched much at all over the past month and really haven't complained about not watching it. I think they watched a Discovery documentary on the Great Migration (from Mississippi to Chicago) and we talked about that for most of the week. It just so happens that my 8 year old was studying it in school and watching real footage made it more interesting and fun for him.

Do you find yourself watching television in the morning before work? If so, did you find that you were not focused on your day and did you experience time slipping by you? Yes, many of us may watch the news for the weather and updates on the time, but that is about it. Many of us will listen out for info rather than sit and watch. Your children sitting and watching will impede their time management and again, focus.

If you begin good habits before and after school, your children will benefit in the long run. By having more family interaction and conversation, your family bond will grow, your children will develop to become better thinkers, and their place and value in the family will be more evident to them. I feel that too much television takes away from the aforementioned.

It depends on what program they're watching. Discovery Channel's fine, because it gives them an atmosphere of "things to be learned", compared to random Disney shows that just makes your kid go nuts. And make sure that the TV show isn't so addicting that your child wants to stay behind and watch TV, therefore going late to school.

Do you mean before they start school each day (every morning before going to school) or before they ever even enroll in school (like a 3-year-old watching tv before starting Kindergarten)?

Nope. We learned from experience that as far as our son is concerned, it makes him less attentive in school. Can't put a finger on why though. Mornings are stressful enough for young & old alike without adding television to the mix.
