Probably the best option is by bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 41st St and 8th Ave. The meadowlands is right on Rt 3 Westbound from NYC and a number of buses travel that route. You might be looking for a stop in Secaucus actually. It's about a 10 minute trip from the terminal.
Probably the fastest option is the #320 Park and Ride bus which stops very near to the area, and runs frequest buses up to 1 AM. It makes stops at the North Bergen Park & Ride lot, Harmon Meadow in Secaucus, Mill Creek, and the Meadowlands Convention Center.
I used to ride this bus all the time. The one-way adult fare used to be about $2.00.

You could take the subway up to Port Authority (E - to 42nd St. inside of Port Authority or the N,R,W - Times Sq station & walk a block), then take NJ Transit bus directly to the Meadowlands Sports Complex (Bus #164 goes there). Check www.njtransit.com for time schedules. You could do this trip one way for under $5. Just make sure you check which gate the bus leaves from because most of the buses are all reassigned new gates due to some construction.

Good Luck!

If you are going to an event at the Meadowlands, the best thing to do is take the subway to Port Authority and then take the bus from there.
I have tried to find regular public buses to get back and forth to events, but they do not have them! Even the people that work at the stadium take the bus that goes in/out of Port Authority.
Go into the south building (closest to 40th Street, not 42nd) and walk straight back past the escalators and on your left there will be a few steps up to some ticket windows - that is where you can get the tickets and the information on bus times.

Take the 4, 5 or 6 trains and get off at Grand Central. From there you will want to go to the Port Authority so either walk or transfer to the S train. When you are in the Port Authority find a bus that stops at meadowlands.

Unfortunately, the nearest Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) station is 2 miles away, at 34th Street/Rt. 440. Otherwise, I would suggest taking the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail to Exchange Place and then taking the PATH into Manhattan (this works for Lower Manhattan. If you're going to Midtown, stay on until Pavonia-Newport) The fare is $1.90 for the HBLR and $1.75 for the PATH. Remember to buy your HBLR ticket before boarding the train, as you'll get hit with a $100 fine if you're caught without one. Unfortunately, it looks like the best way is to drive, unless you can arrange for a taxi to bring you to/from the train station. I hope this information was very helpful.

The least cost wise would be bicycle, then motorcycle. If these are physically a unwise way. an automobile, the train. Am not being smart, but it beautiful this time of year if the weather is co-operating. Much to enjoy.....
