I have not just lost a dog so I hope you don't mind my answering the question anyway. Growing up my family had two dogs. The first one, a norwegian elkhound, my parents had to put to sleep when I was 11 and the second one just after my freshman year in college. I was very attached to the second dog, a sheltie, who was put to sleep. I had a very rough year my freshman year and every time I came home he was there for me despite his illness. when I came home for the summer it almost seemed as though he waited for me to let him know I was okay before he passed away. He had a seizure while I was out of the house and I walked in in the middle of it. As soon as I touched him and told him it was okay for him to go, he came out of the seizure and his poor, frail body finally relaxed. We took him to the vet to be put to sleep as soon as we could. It was his time, but it was still so hard. I can hardly help but cry while I write this.
That said, I love the dogs I have now like they were my kids. My husband and I went away for a week and my sister was watching them. My baby, a puerto rican street mutt, got out of the yard in the middle of winter and we couldn't find him for four days. It was horrible. I couldn't function and cried almost all the time. All I could think about was all the horrible things that could have happened to him. These animals are my family. We live with them EVERY day and many of our daily routines revolve around them. When they are suddenly no longer part of that routine it rips out your heart...or it did mine. I cannot begin to say I know exactly how you feel, but I truly sympathize with your loss and hope you find happiness in the memories of your time with your pet.

Sometimes I think there is no greater pain than losing your four-legged soulmate. I have had to say goodbye to a few of mine over the years, but none hurt so much as my beloved Woosie - the most gentle and beautiful Rottie. It's been just over 2 years since she left, and I'm tearing up just writing this answer.
My current Rottie (Connor) has just been diagnosed with bone cancer - so we are now preparing to have to say goodbye to him sooner than we expected... but his remaining time will be the best time of his life.

This wasn't recent...I hope you don't mind that I am answering your question anyway. I lost Zeus, my male Akita, two years ago. My husband and I had adopted him as an adult from a shelter in Brooklyn, NY.
It was the most sadness I had ever felt in my entire life. It was awful. We were just talking about him before. Sometimes I can't believe he is gone.

I don't think the ache will every go away. Losing your best friend and in the case of some people your soul mate, isn't something you ever really get over. I'll always love you my sweet babies.....

Lost as in can't find? Or lost as in passed away?
Either way, it hurts. I've had both happen to me over the years.
