I recently purchased a KODAK EASYSHARE Z612 and feel it well worth the cost. The cost was $399 + tax. You can find information on it on Kodak's site.
12X optical zoom lens featuring image stabilization
6.1 megapixels
High resolution 2.5 in. (6.4 cm) color display
Digital camera battery and charger included
Simple to use video features
Advanced settings and custom modes
Picture enhancing features
KODAK Color Science Chip
Looks like they have them for $330 now.

The November, 2006 issue of Consumer Reports lists the Canon 10 megapixel Digital Rebel xTL ($900) as a "best buy." They also list the Canon 8 megapixel EOS Digital Rebel XT ($750) as a "best buy."
I prefer a SLR camera with at least 10 megapixels. Consumer Reports (same issue) mentions the new Sony Alpha DSLR-A100 with 10 megapixels ($1,000), also the Nikon D80 ($1,300 and a "best buy" as well), and the Canon mentioned above.
I have a 6 megapixel Nikon coolpix and am very dissatisfied with it. Will probably look at the Canon or Sony next.

There are several good cameras on the market right now that fit that criterion but how much are you willing to pay? Off the cuff, I'd suggest the Canon Powershot S3 IS; it does not have interchangeable lens capacity but with a 12X lens, you really shouldn't have to worry about changing lenss. Or, if you really want to get into it, check out Canon's Digital Rebel and compare it to the new, almost foolproof, according to the advertised specs of the Nikon D40 just announced this week, which should be out after Thanksgiving, and will cost about $600 or less with a kit lense of reasonably good quality and it has interchangeability, too. Also, for about $100-$150 more, you can also get the Nikon D50, which came out a few months ago and people are still RAVING about it... or the now older model, the Nikon D70S or the also new model and the one that there's a waiting list to get your hands on, the Nikon D80 for avid photographers for about $1,150 with a kit lens (REALLY a great camera!)
Check out this site, and when you get there scroll down to read on the camera you wish to find out about:

My experiences are that Canon may have a more aggressive advertising campaign and bells and whistles but, let's face it, Nikon eventually comes out with a really great product quality-wise. Also, Nikon has the lead in ergonomics; go to any camera shop and hold one of their SLRs or DSLRs and you'll understand the mystique (also known as "NAS," or "Nikon-Acquisition Syndrome") behind a Nikon camera!
Since you did not mention your budget, I gave you a few choices to consider. Good luck and best wishes.

Canon has the Powershot S3 IS which is 6 mp and 12x zoom. Nikon has the Coolpix S10 VR that s also 6mp and 10x zoom. There are other brands out there, and I have used some of them (Fuji, Kodak, Sony)...they're ok, but they all seem to have little annoying quirks that Nikons and Canons don't have (things like start up delays, and other oddities that you only find out after you've had it for a while).

The prices can go from one end to the next. If you're not trying to take pics of two or three blocks away, then you really don't need some super pixeled cam. And be very picky when you do chose... some cams don't produce still pics when you slightly move during shot. I found a Canon A300 to be the best I've owned, by far. I own just about every cam you could think of, so this camera really stands out.

I recommend anything Canon Powershot. I own a Canon A620, 7.1 megapixels, 16 zoom and I love it! I have also had other Canon powershot cameras that all proved to be excellent products.

I would recommend a Sony Cyber-shot. My mom has one and it works great.
