Don't buy your icing. It melts WAY too quickly in the bag to be of any use while you're piping your stars. Make a buttercream (you can tint it, add chocolate, cocoa powder, flavorings, anything) that has powdered sugar and a high-ratio shortening in it, like crisco. To give it a buttery flavor, either do half butter and half shortening, or add butter flavoring (can be bought from any grocer). There's a recipe for buttercream on the back of C&H bags of powdered sugar that will work well if you substitute shortening for butter, and add 2 tablespoons of water.

Try the General Dollar store. They offer their generic frosting for $1 a can, which will generously frost a 9 x 11 sheet cake or a two-layer cake. I also use this frosting on cookies and cupcakes; store bought or home made. This is a very creamy frosting, and may not be suitable for crafting flowers, butterflies, or other intricate cake decorations; but, for $1, it's worth a try. Usually only comes in white, vanilla, or chocolate; but add a little food coloring for variations.

I like to use Betty Crocker. I microwave it for a few seconds, few being the key word, to soften it up. I wouldn't use the whipped type, just too light for what you want to do.

No. It's too creamy, too soft to work with. If you like a particular flavore though you can add powdered sugar to get it to right consistancy.

The "Whipped" frosting stinks! Any other kind is fine; my family likes Pillsbury.
