My boyfriend is turning 18 in a couple days, and the government is hoping to do a draft next year, and if he does get drafted, I wonder if maybe it'd be better to go to jail for a little bit or go off to war?

Ok, adding something here. Everyone keeps saying I might be drafted too. I'm 15, I'm not worried about me. I'm worried about my boyfriend who will be 18 in 2 days.

adding something else. It has nothing to do with me not wanting him to serve, it me worrying about him being killed before we have a chance to start our lives

Look. Here's the whole situation point by point.
1. Registering for Selective Service is compulsory. If you do not, you go to jail for 10-20 years, pay a fine. You cannot receive any federal or state aid (college aid, WIC, food stamps, federal or state employment would all be totally out of the question). This will go as well for anyone he marries.
2. If they're bound and determined to institute a draft...for example, I was put out of Marine Recruit Training with a back problem. In a draft, they will overlook that and probably put me back on Parris Island to finish Marine Recruit Training and go to war. Ive been told if I go to the military again, I risk permanently injuring my back. Yet, I would still go willingly because it is my duty as an American to do so. If I **** up my back just to do my country's bidding for four years, I would do it without reservations. Has your boyfriend had any problems like that? The answer is most likely no, because he has no outer world experience outside the comfort of mommy and daddy's home and patronage. Life is cruel and hands you the meanest twists and turns.
3. The question your boyfriend needs to ask himself is how many doors does he want to shut to himself when it comes to living a good life. Most employers will see he is a draft dodger and deny him employment because that is dishonorable as hell, and a poor example for other employees. That could serve a warning as to his character as well, being rebellious and uncooperative in a time of national need. The federal and state governments will deny him any aid for college and economic welfare just for not registering for Selective Service.
4. Even if the rules somehow magically change and women do have to register through Selective Service, women will never go to Combat Arms branches of the military. Though experence in this war will tell you there are no front lines, hence no 100% safe area, even at home in the good old USA.
Tell your boyfriend to grow up and be a man for once. From now on, he has to step up in absolutely every thing he does, or he'll be buried. This includes registering for Selective Service despite his personal feelings.

If you're 15 and he's going to be 18 in 2 days he's got bigger problems than worrying about being drafted.

Well if you can remember what had happened to Muhammad Ali. The probability of him going to jail will be a sure thing. Muhammad Ali served a three year term. I would think that they will put a person in jail for the minimum time that you are allowed to serve as an active person, and that would be two years.

On your 3rd comment you stated that you don't want him to die before you can start your lives together. Are you saying that the only possible way that he can die is by joining the military. I turned on the news today and in my town about four people died. None of them were ever in the military, none of them were even near a combat zone. If he gets drafted, then he will serve his time then get out. I hate to say this, but if its a persons time to go its a persons time to go no matter where they are at.

You would be drafted too. The new draft would not be for just men.
You cant run to Canada anymore either like you could in Vietnam, you have to legally immigrate there. You should start checking into that now.
Or maybe Mexico, but even the natives dont want to live there.

I would not worry, we are a long way from reinstating the draft, in reality. We are not so far out that the legislators have forgotten the huge social upheaval it caused the last time they had a draft. What we have seen between Republicans and Democrats would pale in comparison to the divide it would create in this country.

It would not recommend you're being drafted. the belief is that if there's a draft, they have counsel on you. If the draft ever gets carried out lower back, they are going to be extra significant issues to be stressful approximately than getting drafted, like on an popular basis survival. You, my chum, are overreacting. This regulation has been in consequence a minimum of ten years, that became as quickly as I became 18. They even presented you a thank you to no longer sign in, out of your unique positioned up. in case you think you're no longer required to sign in, ,finished area B of the form and grant helping evidence (copies in basic terms). Please make particular and, if mandatory, astonishing all counsel on the form. sign and date the form and return it to us in the enclosed envelope interior 10 days. there is your way, in case you think of you do no longer ought to, yet all US male electorate are required to sign in. this is all this is.

I don't understand all this mewling and whining about serving your country. Where do you think your freedom came from? Where does he think it came from. Mom & Dad pick it up at Wal Mart for ya? No, they didn't. Men & women went off to foreign lands, did their hitch, did what was needed to keep others from being crushed under tyrannical rulers and if they were lucky, they made it home. It's coming down to crunch time and all the whining in the world about how it isn't your war, not your President mean less than nothing. Where do any of us get off with this attitude of entitlement? Somebody paid a price so we could have the freedom to choose which candidate to vote for, be able to speak freely without worrying if our families were going to be dumped in a mass grave and covered over while still breathing. It's time to give something back dammit. /rant off

Going to jail as a draft dodger will follow him for the rest of his life. Better to do community service as a Conscientious Objector. One Senator out of 100 mentioned it (though I'm sure Kerry is all for it). I think even his fellow Democrats objected. A draft is a long way off--if it ever comes back.
