Pro: Keeps the criminal element off the streets.
Con: Serves as a school of crime, and teaches criminals better techniques.

Pro: Punishment for breaking the law.
Con: With all of the perks, is it really punishment?

I guess overall, I think having prisons around is a very good thing. It does keep the criminal element confined and it protects the public from danger of having criminals roam free. But I do have issue with all of the things that prisoners have while in prison. Other than losing their freedom, how is it really punishment? I mean, they have a free membership to a healthclub, free schooling - high school and college, free training for jobs outside the prison walls, and so much more. All that, 3 square meals and a roof over their head. I think some see it as a "better place" than where they were.

We need prisons, but they need to be real punishment. Not a place to relax and learn how to be a better criminal.

Prisons are a necessary. Do they solve anything? It depends on who you talk to. If you talk to the cons, some will tell you that prison reforms them. Others tell you that it teaches them how to kill cops. I do believe that todays prisoners are granted way to many rights. I believe that an education in prison is good, but I also think that the education should come along with hard work and technical training. I don't see anything wrong with "chain gangs." They still use them in the county I live in, but they are just not chained up any more. They do dig ditches and pick up trash on the highways. The repair roads and cut trees. Pretty much anything that requires man power, they do. Personally, I think that the prisoners who join a prison church group and accept Christ are the ones who do the best at truely being rehabed.

Pros: It removes the individual from society, making it impossible for him to continue to victimize the public.

Cons: They are the people inside the prison excluding guards and other prison workers :)
But seriously the cons are that about 3% are unjustly convicted and there are many that are rightly convicted but are guilty of victimless crimes that the legal-law enforcement-prison industrial complex keeps promulgating to maintain growth in their industry.

It punishes the offender and sometimes gives closure to the victim.

On the down side, it will often teach professional criminals to be better criminals when they get out. Many "cons" practice or teach each other stuff to help them either evade or kill police officers, or to commit better strong arm robberies, how to conceal weapons and contraband, etc..

Prison takes them out of society at least for awhile. It deters a lot of people from breaking the law. Some decide to change because of it.

It can make you insane. It keeps criminals off the streets. It sometimes releases people too early. It needs a better system.

Sure it does, at least all the people there can't be out committing more crimes like murder, rape, child molestation, etc.As long as these people are locked up, society is temporarily safe.
