I have a three year old dog that will not stop pooping in the house. We just moved into a place where he isn't able to hide his poop in a room that we don't go in, so he poops over by the kitchen table. I have been scolding him everytime that he does it. I pick him up carry him over to the poo, shove his nose in it, and tell him that he is a bad dog. I then throw him outside. I also have been praising him when he does go poop out side. He knows he isn't supposed to do it, because every time he does he will hide behind the chair, so i know that he did something wrong. I am doing everything that i know to do, he isn't pooping inside as much as he used to, but I want to completely eliminate the problem. What else can i do?

First DO NOT shove his nose in it that is not teaching him anything. Get a crate just larger than the dog. So the dog can turn around in it but not have enough room to walk around in it and go to a far end to poop and pee. Keep him in this crate when you sleep or are not home or are unavailable to watch him. As soon as you take him out of the crate take him outside. Praise him for doing his business outside. When you have him out of the cage and are watching him look for signs that he is going to go. Take him outside. If the dog goes and you do not see him go DO NOT punish the dog. The dog does not know what it is being punished for after the fact. This is how you train a puppy to go outside but it works with older dogs as well. After he goes outside consistently you can try leaving him outside the crate again but if there are accidents return him to the crate.

Well first of all, your techniques aren't quite right. Shoving your dogs face into the poop doesn't help the situation. It actually makes him want to go back to the same place. When your dog poops in a certain area, not mean, but put your hands in front of your dog face and say "No! Bad boy." Then you get newspaper and dog cleaner (you can find it in pet stores, it eliminates the pee & poop from the carper) and you place the waste on the newspapers and place the newpapers where you want the dog to go. This may not seem like it works, but trust me, it will! It will not work overnight, but if you keep being patient the dog will soon learn that it should poop outside. Also, watch out for circling and bending motion. It signals your dog has to potty.
Hint: When you show your dog the location it SHOULD use the bathroom at, praise him in a nice tone and give him a treat if available.

Well For One, You Never Shove Your Dogs Nose In His Feces. You Should Just Simply Say No When You Catch Him In The Act And Take Him Out To The Bathroom And Praise Him When He Goes. If You Punish Him After He Done It, It Wont Help. You Might Want To Try Crate Training Him.

Good gravy!

1. NEVER shove your dog's nose in poo!
2. He's not hiding because he knows he did the wrong thing, he's hiding because you're yelling at him and shoving poo up his nose.

Dogs live in the moment, they have no memory NO MEMORY of what they did 5 minutes ago. If you shove your dog's face in the poo, all they know is you're yelling and now they have poo up their nose. THEY LEARN NOTHING THIS WAY!

First, start by crate training your animal. If he needs to be housebroken, crate training is by far the easiest way to accomplish your goal.

THIS IS A PEOPLE PROBLEM NOT A DOG PROBLEM! Be consistent and train your dog with positive reinforcement. Your negativity is hampering your dog's progress.

http://www.leerburg.com is a wonderful resource.

My dogs were trained in 2 weeks using the crate method. You need to physically take your dog outside to potty first thing in the morning, after exercising, after a meal, and the last thing you do before bed. You have to make a committment and then your dog will reward you. When your dog eliminates outside, make a BIG deal out of it. We clapped and said "YAY" and "GOOD POTTY" and gave lots of rubs when they went outside, and it worked lickety split.

Finally, be sure you're completely eliminating the odor from where the dog has had his accidents in the past. Use Apple Cider Vinegar to eliminate any ammonia oder that may remain.

Please treat your dog more humanely. Using physical force is no way to get the dog to trust you.

SHOVING HIS NOSE IN IT IS CRUEL AND DOESN'T WORK! Dogs can't connect a punishment you give with something they already did, you have to catch them in the act...their brains just can't make the connection.

He hides behind the chair when he does it because he knows when you SEE the poop, you will shove his nose in it and tell him he's a bad dog, he doesnt know its BECAUSE he pooped in the house or that its bad. You have to catch him doing it for him to get it.

Why is he having this opportunity to poop so much in the house? Sounds like you need to let him out more often. He should go out every 3 hours or so if you are home, and right after he eats or plays with you.

Start over with the potty training. Don't give him the opportunity to do it. Watch him and if you see him begin to do the poop squat, immediately holler no, pick him up and take him outside. Then praise the dickens out of him when he does do it. When you cannot give him your 100% attention, crate him. Also, try using the enzyme eliminator so he doesn't smell where he went before and decide on an encore. Remember, praise praise praise and be patient. Believe me, I'm working with a 4 month old puppy on it now and it can be difficult, but don't give up.

Well first you have to eliminate all odor from where the dog has gone and if safe to do so use bleach to dstroy any odor if not go to a Petstore and get product that will get rid of urine, feces odor-a dog can also smell many more times what you can't and it is a dog's instinct to smell looking for poop odor before he poops and why they will always go in the same area. Could be people who were in the house before had a animal poop by the kitchen table-your dog smelled and the smell to him says OK to go there again instinct. The dog does NOT know he has done something wrong but is reacting to your actions, tone of voice etc.Rubbing his nose in the poop also does NOTHING to teach the dog-for if this was a effective way to teach the dog and dogs are relatively smart he would have gotten it by now and would have stopped. He is hiding fo you probab;y yell scolding him and so forth and he is actually attempting to hide behind the chair from you. Do you have time like in the AM and then approx 30min after he eats that you or someone else that is responsibly mature takes him outside to poop-a schedule for that is what the dog responds . In the AM first thing I let my dog into his backyard pen where he does his business -if its really cold or very rainy after I will let him back in but after he eats 30 minutes later will take him back out-if he is in most of the day he is taken out in the AM then around noon and again around 4PM for eats around 3:30(2nd meal) for instead of 1 big feed him 2 smaller meals. The dog eventually learns the schedule and also learns that to go outside is to poop/urinate and eventually will go to the door or whine to go outside. Go to this site for it tells how to train your dog properly-talks of a puppy being trained but the same procedure with a adult dog for obvious you never trained your dog to where it could learn to go outside to poop. www.petcaretips.netalso unless you get rid of the smell you will not be able to teach your dog right and he
ll go back to the spot-instinct is stronger than fear

He is hiding not because of shame. Animals don't know shame. Dogs need to be rewarded for doing the right thing, not be encouraged to be afraid of this weird human who likes tormenting him for no reason!

Also if you catch him in the act, shout bad dog. Dogs have no concept of 'past' in the sense that humans do. if you punish him and you don't catch him the instant he's doing it, as in midpoop, pretty much he's gonna be confused. And get an abused temperment from being punished randomly (in his mind.)

For us we used a clicker and doggie treats and took him outside right after eatting. We trained him witht he clicker so he elarned than a click meant he was a good dog. When he pooped we clicked (it's a fast sound so he could pinpoint exactly when he was good) and gave him a treat. He learned to potty on command really fast, and no accidents!

Crating kept him from going when we couldn't watch him. Since he thought of it as his lair, he wouldn't go in it. We had problems with himm going in the crate but that was because the crate was way too big so he'd poop in one end and sleep in the other. We trimmed down the crate, and that was the end of that (thankfully). Potty on command worked better because it was easier to get him to associated it with good stuff like food, then to chase him around and yell at him every time he went on the floor. Plus rewards nearly always work better then punishment.

Sounds like you may need to crate train him. How long have you lived in this new house? It may be that he is out of his old routine.....or maybe you guys have been a little busier and have not been able to give him as much attention....sometimes dogs will do this as an attention getter.....well good luck....
