Pull the radio out. On the back is a code. Also, have your VIN number ready. Call a dealership and they should give you the code as they can cross reference that the radio code matches the VIN number. The number will be a 4-digit code. Ask them the sequence (what buttons have to be pushed) of properly entering it into the radio. You only have 3 incorrect tries before it will reset and you have to wait an hour before trying again. If you enter the correct sequence and number, your radio will work.
If the dealer you call say they won't do this over the phone, call another one. I have done this with 3 VW's for friends and only refused once. Needless to say, I won't recommend that dealer as they were showing they don't care about helping customers.

Alright... Like everyone said. First check the manual. Look for a card, or small sticker. That's where it sometimes might be.
If that doesn't work there's something you can try. Some models and years of VWs had the code "hidden" in the trunk of the car, or more precisely in the well for the spare tire. It should be a sticker with the code on it. Look for it.
If nothing works try the stealership.

if you have the owners manual look in the back of it there should be another book. Inside it there will be a car about the size of a business card on it will be the code for the radio. It is not in the manual but in the other book on the card.

I had a '99 Jetta and the same thing happened to me. When the battery is disconnected the radio thinks it's been stolen, only the original dealer could get my code because it was a special order, if yours wasn't it possible any dealer could help.

Now that you have one problem solved, let me solve the other one. This will never happen to you again with a keep alive on the car while the battery is out. It's a simple little box batteries in it and a plug that goes into your cigarette lighter that will insure nothing loses its memory while the battery is out. Ask for it at your favorite auto parts store and never have to worry about things like that again.
