Martin Luther didn't start the Reformation to start a new church. His original hope was to reform the Catholic Church in bring it in line with what the Bible said. Many of the "High Protestant" churches such as Anglicans, Lutherans, etc. consider themselves the TRUE catholic church.

Luther didn't consider the Eucharist pagan. However, he condemned much of the Catholic appropriation and adaptation of ancient pagan culture, like Aristotelian theology or Renaissance art.

Martin Luther's big point was "The just shall live by faith." The idea that it's trust in Christ's goodness that gets us through, not our own works. He wanted "all things pagan" out of "The Church."

Luther was against the corruption of the Catholic Church. I agree with the above poster that he did not intend to establish a new religion.

John Wesley did the same thing in the Church of England (though it wasn't corruption). He would up creating the Methodist Church, though he considered himself an Anglican until the day he died.
