Its not that I have a fascination watching my dog have a dump outside, its just that I, as well as well as others have observed this behavior by a dog after its done its thing. Yes it can be amusing cause they seem "triumphant" as they shoot their back legs out a few times, one after the other. I've never seen any other animal do this. Gawd,,,,,,, you all must think I have an animal poop watching fetish!!!! LMAO

Dominant adult dogs kick up soil with the hind legs, perhaps to disperse its scent and increase territorial marking. Glands in the footpads mark the soil with scent during digging.

Although the dog has been domesticated for years and years their entire history of existing from the time when they were wild for originated from wolves is in their genes and some behaviours are still present. Animals in the wild will bury their feces so cannot be tracked by a predator, killed and eaten and that is what your dog,ALL Dogs, including mine do. Although mine will actually sometimes manage to bury it but most of the time you'll see dirt flying for is putting nails into the ground and then kicks leg back to thow the dirt back. Cats do this too-why I got a enclosed litterbox for too much litter was being kicked out of the litterbox. so the dog is not celebrating his going o the bathroom but attempting to bury so can't be found. A lot of animals in the wild do this.

Dogs kick up their back legs after going poo because if they lived in the wilderness, where they originated, they would need to cover their scent so larger animals couldnt track them. If they didnt cover it up, the predator could follow the "trail" and hunt them down. Its just instincts.

It has nothing to do with "covering" or getting any fecal matter off from their legs/paws. Dogs aren't incompetent- rarely do they get any poop on them while they are doing the deed.

It is a sign of dominance, period.

It may seem to be the equivalent of doing a high five, but I think dogs do it because they are making sure they are clean. After all, they don't use toilet paper, so they somehow must remove every little bit of poop that might cling to their fur!

Have any of you considered the fact that after squatting like that, and pooping, that their legs might be a little cramped. Maybe they just want to stretch them.. wouldn't you.

It's a matter of covering their scent so they won't be either hunted by larger prey or give themselves away to the prey they're hunting.

Instincts... they're a wonder to behold.

It's a dominant marking behavior...claiming the territory.
