The advice I have my son when his gf of five years broke up with him is: "You can love someone all you want, but if they don't love you back it isn't going to work. And, it is better to break it off now than to be married and have a family." I hope this helps.

You need to let her say stupid stuff sometimes and not want to smack her because she is so sad. She will get the point eventually and move on, but it takes a very long time if you are in love.

Tell her that she should be a complete and happy individual without a man. Men don't complete us, they just add a little something extra. That saying that our 'partner' "makes us whole" is garbage... strong independant women are quite competent and able, thank you very much.
Ask her how she was benifitting from the relationship. Then reassure her she will one day find someone from whom she will gain more positively from.

Tell her stuff like 'obviously you two weren't right for one another." and if she's going off the deep end talking about ending her life because of some looser, tell her that "no looser deserves that never ending devotion for you to take your life for." if he couldn't see what a prize you were oh well. Just some of the simplest stuff used to make no sense to use when we were teenagers and our parents would tell us the crazy stuff that we never believed but in the end worked.

takes time to get over a breakup, tell her you will be there for her when she needs to talk. try taking her out and tell her it's time to move on.
