There is a dog in my neighborhood that was hit by a truck and left for dead. This is a total stray dog that everyone in the neighborhood has been feeding, but nobody would take him to the vet...I did, but didnt have much cash for all that needed to be done. I have access to versed and can inject it, but would like to know how much is safe for a 50-60 pound dog.

The vet didnt give any advice, just that he possibly had a broken shoulder and it would heal on its own. I dont have the funds to get all the medical attention he needs, but I would like to keep him as comfortable as possible. Is this safe & how much can I give?

What about giving him fentanyl?

OMG! Don't do it, but, if you must, try 0.2-.04 mg/kg IV, IM. This sedative should last for less than 2 hours. Hope the dog doesn't have an anaphylaxis reaction!

And why are you asking? That is a people med for one thing. Would you just offer it to another person? So, why do you want to give it to your dog?

Now, if a vet has prescribed it for your dog then I must assume he felt it was the proper med for a problem. 98% of meds used with animals are human meds. If this is the case I hope he told you what to watch for as in side effects, etc. Why he thought it necessary and any other questions you had. If in doubt look it up online and check out. There might be side effect warnings he didn't mention. Yes, those are intended for people but there will be similarities for human and animal.

I consider this a important issue. A dog cannot tell you if a med is making it feel bad, worse, icky, nauseous, etc. That scares me a bit. They can't tell us "hey this stuff is making me feel weird"!!!
So if your vet did not advise you to keep a close eye on dog for any changes, please do. From appetite to behaviour. Any changes at all, make a note of. If the dog acts diff or something that doesn't seem right or normal then question the vet immediately. You are the voice for your dog.

Consult with your vet. Never give any medication to a dog without first consulting with a vet.

You could, but why would you, unless you're performing surgery or a diagnostic procedure on your dog . . . In which case, you're nuts.
