that's a good question ... i don't remember when it became trendy either ... since its not ... wicca is a religion practiced by millions of people ... there are plenty of "kids" acting like it is ... but you forget about the people who are devoted to this religion genuinely.

Well, the public image of Wicca was "trendy" in the 80's. Mostly because it was an easy way for teenagers to get into something new. Most of those people who did it in the 80's are NOT Wiccan now. Though, Wicca does have a more serious side to it and there are some who stick to that rather than staying with the TV image of it. Sadly, this is what most people outside of Wicca see and think all Wiccans are like this. A lot more true historical study has went into Wicca and it is banishing a lot of the Fluffy image it has held for so long.

As for it being gone in 10 years, I find this laughable. It started in the 40's in England and has done nothing but grow since then. I do not see it going away in 10 years or even 40 years. It's a lot stronger then you think, though, again, this is due to the fact that so much of the Fluffy side of it is published.

I was Wiccan when I was 12 (which was in 1982). I was given a title by the time I was 18. I am now a Pagan... Eclectic, Reconstructionist (meaning I actually look at the historical validity of something before I claim it to be "Pagan") and 36 yrs old. I know MANY people who were in Wicca... some stayed in it, most left to either go back to Christianity or to become simple Pagans. This seems to be the way the religion has grown and has stayed as strong as it has.

Its not trendy. It's a reaction to the extreme oppression of Christianity and the older religions.

People are becoming dissatisfied with the old religions and are looking for something to replace them that fits better with our times.

It's the same way all religions start. Wicca is so open, there's no oppression of others AT all except that most Wiccans really dislike those who claim to be Wiccan and yet violate the Harm None law by doing things like sacrifice.

1. Because they're are no rules, only don't harm anyone. As long as you stick to it, do what you want and what feels right. Christianity has divided up into sects. This is freedom of choice.

2. Women have equal rights and importance. nevermind what the bible says about handing women.

3. Wiccans do not usually preach except to those who are willing and adult, able to think for themselves.

4. They like nature. Enviromentalism is a growing trendy for good or for ill.

5. They reject the concept of hell. They do not believe in absolute evil.

6. LIBERAL (I stress) Christians can blend Wiccan beliefs into their beliefs.

A comment from religioustolerance.org on it's growth:
"This is seen particularly among some teenagers, who are rejecting what they feel is the autocracy, paternalism, sexism, homophobia, and insensitivity to the environment that forms part of some more traditional religions."

On equality:
"Wicca has generally accepted the equality of men and women. Christianity has historically reserved positions of power in the church, the rest of society and the family for males."

On a personal note:
I admire the Wiccan philosophy, I really do. But I could never be a Wiccan due to my science and religious beliefs. So this all comes from knowlege picked up secondhand. I can't even give you anecdotes.

Now I do like Wiccans and I like the environment as much as anyone, but I've never believed in being totally 'one' with nature (I think it would eat me if it could, mother nature is one tough cookie) and most Wiccans believe in things like tarot cards, and ouija boards and magicks. These are the kind of things they debunked ages and ages ago, even Penn and Teller debunked them.

First of all, who said Wicca is a trend?

Second of all, when did it become trendy to nastily-phrase questions?

I'm Wiccan, and I've definitely noticed that in young people.

Maybe because it's natural?

Since TV made it trendy. Oh it is so simple just to make it up as you go along.

It's a fad. From what I've observed mostly women join it. In ten years some other 'religion' or spiritual group will pop up to join.
