By far, the biggest mistake is following too closely to the vehicle in front of you!
The old rule was to stay back from the vehicle in front of you one car length for every ten miles per hour of speed the traffic was traveling. This was hard to really use since what exactly is a car length? The new rule is called the two second rule. You pick a fixed object, such as a light pole or sign post or overpass and start counting when the back of the car in front of you passes the fixed object. You count one-one thousand, two-two thousand and if the front of your vehicle reaches the fixed object before you get to two-two thousand, you're following too closely. In bad or rainy weather go to three seconds.
The two second rule adjusts automatically for speed whether you're going 30 M.P.H. or 70 M.P.H.
The second biggest mistake is distraction such as playing with the radio controls, trying to make a call on a cell phone, reading a map, etc., or taking your eyes off of the road for any reason. Going too fast for weather or road condtions is another big cause of serious traffic crashes.
These three mistakes represent about 80-85% of all vehicle crashes and not wearing a seat belt properly is the biggest cause of serious or fatal car accidents.
Hope this helps!

Making sure you are clear when you change lanes is a big one also seconding guessing split second driving decisions can lead to trouble, most important NO STRESS!! relax , you will make the best choices on the road if you can clearly think things through and if you do make a mistake and get honked at don't get embarrassed. When we all got our licenses we don't really drive at first we kinda aim and hope we don't hit any thing. so be patient with yourself and enjoy the freedom.

Ummm, mostly to many aggressive jerks on the road. Actually, the turning signal seems to be going out of fashion. So, use your turning signals, don't try to make it through a light that is very yellow, be courteous, no tailgating, put your cell phone down, don't go more than 5 miles over the speed limit, don't try to keep up with speeders, and be alert! Good luck!!!!
