Here is what my doctor told me about leg cramps. I also apply Aspercreme to my legs at night when I am being bothered and it helps. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/night-leg-cramps/AN00499

Cramps may be caused by stressing your legs too much. You have to stretch your leg muscles every now and then. Try putting a pillow or two under your feet so that it is higher than your heart when you are in a lying position. This will help drain the blood from your lower extremities thereby washing away lactic acid that causes the pain. Also, you can put a hot compress on the area. Note:stretching is done when you are not having an episode of cramps.Stretch every now and then. Good luck

When I had leg cramps the doctor told me to stretch the leg by pointing the toes up and then pulling them back toward your head. This does work, but it is painful to get started.

I don't think you will have any damage but are those the worst things to have in the middle of the night? What I do (and it is all instinctual not due to anything medical) is I jump up and stand on the affected foot. Sorry, but I can't help but smile as I have had these many times and they hurt pretty bad.

Stand up and try to stretch it out. Try to walk around a bit.
To prevent them, drink two glasses of orange juice a day. Believe it or not, orange juice has more potassium in it than bananas.

try taking magnesium supplements to prevent them.
also tp prevent them: stop every now and then and properly stretch the muscles in your legs just 10-15 seconds per leg.

This may sound stupid but it really works. Put a bar of soap under your sheet , at the bottom of the bed. It works for me.
