people get back together with their ex's for many reasons:
1. They want to give it another try
2. They don't want to be alone
3. They still care about their ex.
4. They want to get rid of the hurt from breaking up.

Usually because once you leave a relationship you realize how much that person knows about you and how scary it is to start over. The relationship becomes comfortable and going back to it is much easier than going through the whole "new" stage with someone else.
My ex and I once had a weird conversation where we said we wished that each of us could talk to the other's current relationship and let them in on all the little secrets that it took years to learn.
At the same time, sometimes, as awkward as it can be learning about your partner can be fun.

Some times its because they really love each other. But most times, its because change is hard, people are comfortable with what they know, and figure at least they know what they've got. Even if they are just remembering the good times, they really need to think about the reason they broke up in the first place. If they can deal with that, Hey go for it. Lets face it dating these days can be pretty scary.

I wanted to get back with my bf when we split up because i knew i still loved him but because he was the one who ended it i honestly never thought we would get back together but he came over to see our son one night and has been here since!!
He says he never stopped loving me and that we were both taking each other for granted,personally i think he needed to be single again for awhile and get something out his system as we had been together for 6 years and are both still young just now 24 and 28.but i guess there must be things he missed about me just like there was things i missed about him.

This is especially true if the person who wants to get back with the ex was theperson who was dumped.
It could be for something as simple as the chance to dump them back.

Security, constancy, they want something back that they think they are missing. The problem is, is that sometimes they really don't want their ex's, just those things and that is the beginning of on again off again relationship's.

although the relationship may have undergone many painful stages, we always tend to remember the happy times .. sometimes people miss that n the love they shared with someone.. i can closely relate to this question as my boyfriend and i have been on and off for 5 years.. love is the most powerful feeling in the universe and cant be denied

Cause they don't have anyone else or because they really do love them. They're scared of the outside world. They don't know what they wanted until they lost it.
