You have 3 options:
1. Windows ME will upgrade to WIndows XP if u so desire during the installation.
2. Windows XP will also be installed in addition to Windows ME. This can also be done during installation
3.Only Windows Xp after a full format. This is a long and tidy process but is the best option if u want ur comp to be clean

There is an option on the XP install CD for a clean install. That will erase ME and put XP on a clean hard drive. (this is generally the best method for installing XP, as it will not allow ME to interfere with XP's new system schmatics.) God Bless.

If you have a full version it will install over but I don't suggest it.Especially if you are installing over ME.Put the disk in the drive and go with clean install.Keep in mind you will lose whatever you have on your drive now.So if you have stuff you cant lose then back it up first. If you do go with the upgrade then make sure you convert to NTFS.It will be an option during the install.

It would be far better to re-format and do a clean installation with XP.

Xp will load on top of ME unless you tell it otherwise.

Don't forget to save all your data before you format.

If you purchase the XP UPGRADE, it will convert your existing ME installation, leaving your data etc intact. If you bought the full version of XP (non-upgrade), then you'll need to delete your existing partition first- it won't install over an existing operating system.

I'm not sure if you HAVE to format. But, you most definitely SHOULD format. There are performance issues involved with this.
