Well, that is pretty broad.
I mean, I grew up on American food, so I tend to be more partial to it. For example, I prefer the burgers and pizza (invented in NY, not Italy btw) you can get here to the same overseas - but then again, those are traditional American foods. You can get very good native foods in most places, but if you've already sampled the American version of those foods, you may be surprised/let down/made ill by the original version.
One tip though - if you go to Finland, you might want to avoid the local cuisine. Unless you REALLY like dill. Let me put it this way: you've been to an italian and chinese restaurant, right? You've probably at least driven past a korean, indian, or thai restaurant? But have you ever even heard of a Finnish restaurant? No? Neither have the Finns... ;)
P.s. Finland is a great place to visit, I love it there. I just eat what the natives eat - which is generally not Finnish cuisine in my experience...

There is no traditional American food as far as I'm concerned. Americans (other than Native Americans) were influenced by cultures from all over the world and have continued to follow thier heritage when cooking. However some try to stereot ype the "American's" taste. That said, there are those who are well traveled and have developed a well rounded taste for all sorts of food influences and those who just are willing to adventure out there and find a new "fad" to follow. When you go from state to state you encounter regional differences but, the basis for the way food is cooked in a certain region is still there.
Quality comes from the one doing the cooking. Taste is a matter of palate and conditioning.
As far as I'm concerned it's all about influence no matter where you go in the world.

You won't find "traditional" American food anywhere but America. My family has traveled all over, South America, China, South Pacific, Europe... and even the US fast food chains are drastically different. One of the joys of travel is going to the local, off the beaten track, restaurants anyway. I've always found that the local food is much better than the transplanted American food. Be edgy... be adventurous.

I have traveled and live it many parts of the world and I have to say no-one can barbeque as well as Americans.
Every county has it's own specialties and I really got hooked in Switzerland on their Cheese Fondue.

As in America, there is good and bad quality in every country. It's not a question of nationality; it's a question of culinary arts.
