I belong to a small but devout Christian denomination that believes that the sun revolves around the earth. Our minister thinks that all those who don't share this belief should be burned at the stake along with Darwn's copies of "The Origin of the Species." Now, does that seem unreasonable to you? I think religion and the secular world can coincide. I think the quote "Give unto Caesar that is Caesar's" speaks to this. The ACLU is a popular whipping boy of religious conservatives. To many, the ACLU is closely equated with the devil. In fact, according to the latest Zogby poll, the devil has a higher approval rating. Religion can be a short cut to thinking, but not all religious people are close minded. Now if you will excuse me, I will continue reading the latest book by Ann Coulter: " The Liberal Godless Lies Against the Spanish Inquisition."

Well, it's not a simple answer.
But I have to tell you, you have been seriously misled, as I was, about something.
We tend to believe that when people are presented with factual data, that they will give that information consideration.
If I want to be corny, I'd say that you, like I, tend to believe that "the truth will set you free".
It doesn't.
I've heard the most amazing stuff when I've similarly presented people with the actual cases that the ACLU has taken on. The wildest is along the lines of "Well, they have to take on token cases like those so the public will realize that they're *really* a commie-loving anti-religion group of people who are out to destroy the United States (which they define as "our way of life, meaning the 1950s, basically).
I'm not making that up.
But keep up the good fight, m'dear; sometimes miracles happen.

I have 2 points to make:
1. preconceived ideas substitutes for knowledge in many cases.
2. Is it possible that you expect people to be rigid in their thinking the way your parents are? Likely you have been trained (unwillingly on your part) by your parents to expect rigidity in place of fluid thought.
