Santiago is the Spanish concatenation of San Diego, Spanish for Saint James. Santiago de Compostela was a great cathedral city and pilgrimage route through Spain in the Middle Ages. The sanctuary was built by Alfonso II of Asturias, and was rebuilt in the 10th and again in the 13th centuries. This route was the most famous route of pilgrimage after Jerusalem and Rome for hundreds of years, and remains today a popular pilgrimage and tourist attraction in northern Spain.
